Oak Lawn Public Library Patrons Say "No" to Playboy Magazine

Oak Lawn, IL - Safe Libraries announced the results of its survey confirm that patrons are opposed to the subscription to Playboy magazine by the Oak Lawn Public Library. The survey was conducted by an independent social research firm at the village's Fall on the Green festival during September 9-11, 2005. It was initiated in response to the approval of the subscription's retention solely by the members of the Oak Lawn Public Library board of trustees on June 21, 2005. The board members contended that they must serve the community by providing Playboy magazine to those adult patrons who might wish to read it.

A majority of library patrons object to the subscription, the use of tax funds for its purchase, and the reading of Playboy magazine by patrons in the library. Most patrons agree that readers of Playboy magazine should purchase their own subscriptions. Both Illinois State Law (720 ILCS 5/11-20) and Village of Oak Lawn Ordinance (10-5-6-3) prohibit the distribution of obscene materials. Most library patrons agree that the Village of Oak Lawn should comply with all laws that prohibit the viewing of pornography in public places.

Safe Libraries was founded to give a voice to local parents and other citizens in the use of the Internet and the selection and purchase of publications at their communities' libraries. An independent survey shows Oak Lawn, IL citizens do not want tax money used to buy Playboy for the public library. I think this is newsworthy because I am unaware of any other statistically significant survey taken about the opinions of public library patrons, in this case about using tax money to pay for a Playboy subscription, and the results here show the library board of trustess is acting against the interests of a huge majority of citizens/patrons who think patrons should pay for their own subscriptions. The library, whose director is a policy-making member of the American Library Association [ALA], has stated, albeit before this survey was released, that Playboy will continue to be purchased with taxpayer money. Further, only 3 men, out of 133 surveyed, think children should have access to Playboy, and this contrasts with the ALA's view in the so-called Library Bill of Rights that age may not be used to keep patrons from seeing anything they want, but is in keeping with the US Supreme Court case of US v. ALA. What do you all think about the survey? About Playboy in a public library? About the ALA's age discrimination directives being against the public interest as tested in this survey and against the US Supreme Court case of US v. ALA? About what should be the community's next steps to ensure the public library is really the public's library and not the ALA's Oak Lawn branch library?

I wonder if the library stopped at Playboy. Do they also carry Hustler and Penthouse? How about more hardcore porn? Why stop at Playboy?

It's remarkable to browse Free Republic to find all of these articles that reveal the sleaze in charge of many of our public institutions.

Instead, the library decided to still continue to carry those magazines that show soft-core, suggestive Calvin Klein ads of naked youths draped all over each other and call it innovative marketing.

The stopped at Playboy. However, get this, they are advertising the subscription to Playboy in their bimonthly mailing to patrons! See page 2 of their recent mailing. For the entire mailing, see Public Library Advertises Playboy Magazine in Bimonthly Mailing.

For those of you who are not familiar with Oak Lawn, Ill., they are one of your more liberal suburbs of Chicago. A couple of years ago, the Oak Lawn PTA's dropped sponsorship of Cub Scout Packs because the BSA's membership standards do not allow "avowed" homosexuals as members.

Hopefully other organizations sponsored those Cub Scout Packs, yes?

I don't think public libraries should be offering free copies of Playboy. I think people should have to buy it for the articles, like I do.

How much do you want to bet they never thought once about subscribing to the National Review, the Washington Times, American Spectator, the Limbaugh Letter...

"Oak Lawn, Ill., they are one of your more liberal suburbs of Chicago."

Don't think so. Now Oak Park, that's a different story.

Most librarians want to be able to shovel out trash in the name of "free speech", but our little rural library is run by sweet ladies.

I was looking for a children's book, but stumbled on a very vulgar book that was clearly labeled for the children's section. There was bad language and sexually explicit scenes.

I took it to the counter and showed the librarian the offensive passages to be sure this should be in the kiddie department.

Her eyebrows went up as she read, but the computer confirmed it was labeled for the children's section.

She reached into a drawer and pulled out a library card and scanned it in. She finished checking the book out to this "imaginary" patron. She placed the book in a closed cabinet that had quite a few books already in there and closed the door.

"You just won't believe how many books are never returned to the library. ". She smiled at me and went back to here work.

Wow! If she is willing, we or other organizations will publish, anonymously if desired, her story. It sounds very interesting. If the ALA finds out, she's a goner or at least subject to unpleasant action. Others who would be interested in her story, as well as related links, are here:
