Oak Lawn, IL - Safe Libraries announced the results of its survey confirm that patrons are opposed to the subscription to Playboy magazine by the Oak Lawn Public Library. The survey was conducted by an independent social research firm at the village's Fall on the Green festival during September 9-11, 2005. It was initiated in response to the approval of the subscription's retention solely by the members of the Oak Lawn Public Library board of trustees on June 21, 2005. The board members contended that they must serve the community by providing Playboy magazine to those adult patrons who might wish to read it.
A majority of library patrons object to the subscription, the use of tax funds for its purchase, and the reading of Playboy magazine by patrons in the library. Most patrons agree that readers of Playboy magazine should purchase their own subscriptions. Both Illinois State Law (720 ILCS 5/11-20) and Village of Oak Lawn Ordinance (10-5-6-3) prohibit the distribution of obscene materials. Most library patrons agree that the Village of Oak Lawn should comply with all laws that prohibit the viewing of pornography in public places.

It's remarkable to browse Free Republic to find all of these articles that reveal the sleaze in charge of many of our public institutions.
Instead, the library decided to still continue to carry those magazines that show soft-core, suggestive Calvin Klein ads of naked youths draped all over each other and call it innovative marketing.
For those of you who are not familiar with Oak Lawn, Ill., they are one of your more liberal suburbs of Chicago. A couple of years ago, the Oak Lawn PTA's dropped sponsorship of Cub Scout Packs because the BSA's membership standards do not allow "avowed" homosexuals as members.
Hopefully other organizations sponsored those Cub Scout Packs, yes?
I think you're thinking of Oak Park.
Whoops! You're right, it was Oak Park.
Does anyone know of any other such surveys being taken?
I don't think public libraries should be offering free copies of Playboy. I think people should have to buy it for the articles, like I do.
How much do you want to bet they never thought once about subscribing to the National Review, the Washington Times, American Spectator, the Limbaugh Letter...
"Oak Lawn, Ill., they are one of your more liberal suburbs of Chicago."
Don't think so. Now Oak Park, that's a different story.
Blurblogger has asked me to ping EdReform; Born Conservative; Calpernia; Little Jeremiah; Bykrbayb; Mr. Silverback. All, please read this thread and comment if you wish.
I was looking for a children's book, but stumbled on a very vulgar book that was clearly labeled for the children's section. There was bad language and sexually explicit scenes.
I took it to the counter and showed the librarian the offensive passages to be sure this should be in the kiddie department.
Her eyebrows went up as she read, but the computer confirmed it was labeled for the children's section.
She reached into a drawer and pulled out a library card and scanned it in. She finished checking the book out to this "imaginary" patron. She placed the book in a closed cabinet that had quite a few books already in there and closed the door.
"You just won't believe how many books are never returned to the library. ". She smiled at me and went back to here work.
Do you want to tell us the name of the book?
