In August, I drove the stretch of rte 9 , above Bangor, to Calais.
Luckily I fueled up in Brewer,I didn't realize how remote that area is. It is beautiful country with very few people.
I can't imagine what that stretch of rte 9 is like in the winter. - tom

Tom, I've never traveled north on rt 9. We take the I-95 Interstate which ends in Houlton, then we pick up a two lane winding road (rt 1) on up through Presque Isle to Caribou. One of the reasons the truckers hate coming up here. That road between Houlton and Caribou. We have tried for years to get the Interstate extended on up.
We also fill up the gas tank in Houlton because it really is a remote area until you hit Presque Isle. Lots of little brewers and mom's and pops along the way, but when one wants to get home, we would never stop.
When I was a travel agent, I always advised people to leave in the morning to travel I-95 and never travel it at night. Too remote and what with the moose, it can be very dangerous to say the least.
There are a lot of people up here though Tom. You would be surprised. :)
