New Orleans has been a hotbed of wild statements and speculation. Normally I would say to divide everything you hear in half, but in New Orleans I think it would be a much higher number to divide by.
I have heard from no other source than on Free Republic anything concerning the padding issue. So at this stage it is pure speculation.
I believe the Mayor knows he hasn't seen all the heat that's coming his way and is setting up Compass to take the hit. 'He should have gotten the buses to the proper places! He should have had food at the Dome! Man, I was totally blindsided about how bad the Police Department was!'

It was first said on Fox New's radio show by Tony Snow. That is pretty reputable, I think.

Tony Snow broke the story shortly before Compass resigned. My wife heard Tony's broadcast.

FR is NOT the source. Tony Snow reported it, and he cited his contacts in the FBI for the actual story. (Personally, I trust Tony Snow and do not think he made it up.) The FBI has not made an official announcement.

My guess is that this is so devasting for the Dims that no MSM source will touch it unless is officially announced by the FBI. And that will not come until the investigation is complete.

I have heard nothing further from or about Compass. It would be great news if he is in the witness protection program, but that would happen only if he is taking down a really big fish. Moon Landrieu and his family comes to mind (think Senator Mary Landrieu and Governor Kathy Blanco...).
