WASHINGTON, Sept. 28 - President Bush is close to naming a successor to Justice Sandra Day O'Connor and could announce his choice this week, Republicans close to the White House said Wednesday.
One name that was the source of enormous speculation in Washington legal and political circles was Harriet E. Miers, the White House counsel, who is a leader in the search for Justice O'Connor's successor. Ms. Miers, 60, was the first woman to become a partner at a major Texas law firm and the first woman to be president of the State Bar of Texas. At one point, Ms. Miers was Mr. Bush's personal lawyer.

"There is no back and forth," he said. "It's just, 'Give us some names.' I said to her, 'Look, I'd like to know who the president is considering.' And she didn't say anything."
Look, Chuckie, why should Bush's people give you ANY informaiton. You're voting against a highly qualified man for purly partisan reasons ... and you'll vote against this nominee, no matter WHO it is. So, shut up and just vote your vote, hog your camera time, and "do your thing." We, on the other hand, will do the work of the People.
I ran a search and couldn't find this under this title, so I posted it.
Bush is probably looking for someone closer to 50. 60 is on the outside edge of realistic consideration, IMHO.
It's going to be Luttig. Bush never telegraphs his punch.
....heard this morning on Fox News(?) that Laura Bush was pushing for a woman......

Exactly. Bush is just stroking the radical leftists like slobbering Chuckie...he is just going through the motions of "consultation" so that the professional whining libs cannot say he didn't.
Bipartisanship for the SCOTUS? Who is kidding who?
Meirs is 60??? That doesn't fit the mold of having young justices to be on the court for long time. Meirs doesn't make sense regardless of her judicial philosophy.
Hey Chuck...use some of the staffers to back door something like they did with credit reports.
She is too old. Luttig will be the nominee.
The President is the absolutely KING at rope a dope manuvers on the Dummycrats.
Look for either Luttig, Estrada or JRB to be nominated tomorrow at a 9 PM news conference
does Luttig have a paper trail on abortion? The Dems won't need to fillibuster an appointee over this issue - the RINO votes are not there on our side to get an openly anti-Roe person through.
I don't think so. He needs a minority and fortunately, he has good ones. I want Janice Rodgers Brown, but I think he might go for another woman.
After Roberts, Luttig is the best. It will be Luttig.
JRB, Owens or Edith Jones. Then just blast through the filibuster and don't even give the media time to mobilize and they will soon be onto the CIA leak thing when that invest. closes this month.
Yes. Remember how surprised we all were to hear about John Roberts the day of his nomination? I feel confident he'll again pick the judge he wants, not one to make the libs happy.
