Add another name to the list of residents at the Cape Cod military base where evacuees from Hurricane Katrina are staying. But this one didn't need a plane to get there.
Dionne White of New Orleans gave birth Tuesday at Falmouth Hospital to a boy whom she named Cape Cod Bannister, or C.C. for short. It's the first birth to an evacuee staying at Camp Edwards.
"I named him that because I love Cape Cod," White told The Boston Globe. "Coming here has been a big break for me. It's like Christmas, just a big old miracle. And you don't get that very often."
White, 37, has 12 other children, ranging in age from 3 to 21. Four of them with her.
Three others, an 11-year-old and 9-year-old twins, were at White's sister's house in New Orleans during the storm. White says she begged rescuers to take her to her sister's home several blocks away to get her other children, but they could not. Denise Monteiro, spokeswoman for the Massachusetts Department of Social Services, said the children have not been found.
"I am just praying and praying they are OK," said White.
One of White's children is in jail, another is living in Texas, and three are in adoptive care in Louisiana, according to Massachusetts state officials.
White said she plans to remain in Massachusetts where, she said, "everyone treats you with love."
Monteiro said that two houses, one in Hingham and one in Boston, are being considered for White's family.
"We have never, ever, all of us been together," White said, "so, that's my dream, a nice big old house in Boston. And all 13 of my children."
Random men.
LOL
I'm getting depressed just reading about this woman. Do you think that I, too, can get Supplemental Social Security Income bemefits for being disabled? (Obviously, SHE's not too disabled to keep "fooling around".)
Have some respect--that was therapy! Each roll in the hay staved off depression for several hours, at least!
Highham won't want her - I doubt she's ever been in a Talbot's in her life.
I'm getting enraged. I wonder if I qualify for any government money for that.
There is a girl in my building who attempts suicide regularly in order to stay on SSI. She is a bit nutty, but capable of work as she seems to be going on acting audition every week. She knows the welfare rules & plays the game. Makes me so angry to know that my pay helps supplement her sponging life.
Admittedly, I left ten years ago (Lawrence, Haverhill, Reading) so I am not up-to date on politicians. I still have many friends there who can attest to the draconian tax empire's growth.
it is good to hear that there are a few voices in the darkness however. Keep up the good work behind enemy lines, brother.
Fertility is not her problem. I prescribe dime therapy for this woman. She needs to hold a dime between her knees constantly to prevent number 14. I suspect your surmising is correct, but some folks are sensitive if you surmise notions regarding certain politically incorrect topics. It is an elephant in the room few will admit is standing there dropping dung on their shoes.
It surprises me how little this is talked about. Most people have had at least short term depression, and even most with chronic depression can surely hold a job. Disability benefits for mental illness should be limited to those who are actually psychotic- at least you could argue then that keeping them out of the workplace protects fellow workers. Mere "depression" should not be enough to check out of the labor force for life.
Is she referring to the Constitution? Dred-Scott v USA overthrew that name, did it not?
Well, I don't know the circumstances of this woman, but back in the 1800s, there was this woman in Jefferson County, Ohio who already had 12 kids and got pregnant again and had a 13th child. I guess we'd be critical of her today.
I might be too, except that 13th child was my great-great-grandfather.
Not if she raised them right. I bet none of your great-great-grandfather's siblings wound up in jail or on welfare. My problem with the woman is not that she had 13 kids, but that she had 13 kids she couldn't take care of.
If you read on, you'll learn the circumstances. I expect those of your ancestors were much different! My grandfather was the 13th child on a tiny farm in Northern Ireland ... all the children except the oldest son left as soon as they reached adulthood!
Re-read the article. True, my ancestors did not end up in jail, as far as I know. Well, point conceded.
Me, too.
" Where did it give her race?"
I think that it is an assumption based on the statistical facts. I know you want to be a puritan but I think it is very reasonable, based on demographic makeup of NO, to assume the color of the mother.
Not me. She probably 1)had a husband, and 2)didn't expect taxpayers to support a life of leisure.
