A friend of my mother was married to a drunk that hit her fairly regularly when he was drunk.
She hit him upside the head one night with an iron skillet, broke his skull, and when he was in the hospital came to visit him and said:
"Honey, I love you very much, but if you ever hit me again you'd better kill me, because you gotta sleep sometime, you son of a b____".
He never hit her again.
