/begin my translation Massive Search under Way to Arrest an 'Important N. Korean Fugitive Soldier', Tense Sino-N. Korean Border
[Breaking news from the border] Tollgates are manned not by police but military, running thorough checks for possession of weapons |
[2005-09-29 16:22] |
|
Chinese border troops running a checkpoint. All vehicles and passers-by are being checked |
|
Checks and searches in Sino-N. Korean border area to capture 'an important N. Korean fugitive soldier', which had started in the afternoon of (Sept.) 28th, is still continuing as of 4pm, (Sept.) 29th.
At 3pm, (Sept.) 29th[S. Korean time], (Chinese) border troops were urgently dispatched at ' Ryong-yen(?) Tollgate,' located in Yanbian Ethnic Korean Autonomous District, running checkpoints. The tollgate is on the Long-jing side of the highway connecting Long-jing to Yanji.
Normally, it is manned by traffic cops, but (this time) border troops carrying their rifles are running checks on every vehicle and people passing through(the tollgate.) It is highly unusual that border troops guarding the (Sino-N. Korean) border are showing up well inside the border, which makes it almost certain that they are under the order to capture an important N. Korean fugitive.
Border troops running checks only say, "We are looking for a N. Korean," without giving any further hints on what kind of person they are searching for.
|
It is unusual (for border troops) to conduct checks while carrying rifles. [my note: the marking on the vehicle says 'Jilin Border Defense.'] |
|
|
When checking large vehicles, the troops get inside and check every passenger. |
|
|
They check not only passengers of taxicabs but also the inside of their trunk. |

It appears that some big fish escaped from N. Korea.
An earlier report on the same subjectmade the following report:
A source from Chinese security revealed, "we are stepping up checks and searches to arrest an armed N. Korean soldier whose last name is Park. N. Korean authorities made a special request (to China.)" He added, "I have an impression that the fugitive is not just another armed deserter, but a senior officer or some other important figure."
Because of this, all over rural villages near the border, house-by-house search had been conducted until midnight, (Sept.) 28th. Temporary checkpoints were set up along the road leading from Long-jing to Yanji as of 10am, (Sept.) 29th.
As of 11am, (Sept.) 29th, Chinese securities continue to search for him, carrying his photo, without revealing his rank or unit.

Re #10
He will be useful, regardless of China's relation to N. Korea, if he was an important figure.

It's a good thing them North Koreans and Chinese tend to be a mite smaller than us redneck Texans . . . because I couldn't fit my two year-old nephew in that Tonka-Toy Taxi.
Hell, that soldier can't be much over five-six and the taxi comes to his kneecaps.

Maybe, he's carrying the one and only NK suitcase nuke?
To: TigerLikesRooster
Hm. Someone delivering nuclear material to Syria, perhaps?

Notice that the only nice vehicle in the pics is a police car? Ah, communist redistribution at its' finest.
If the Chinese are helping to look for him he may be a really big fish. Specifically big w/ their nuke program. He may have the dirt on Chinese aide to NK's weapons programs.
To: TigerLikesRooster
The part that I'm missing is why he went to China. If he were as important as it seems, I'd think he'd be able to get another way out that was more secure. What would cause him to flee to China? Deal with China that went sour? I just don't have a good feel for the politics over there to guess on the logic. Can anyone enlighten me or point me to a good site that has decent info on the situation?
