INDEPENDENCE, Mo. -- The "dog dilemma" of a hurricane victim who couldn't get Shuma, his helper dog, back from an Independence woman has been resolved. But not the way Shuma's owner had hoped more.
She stepped up and donated Duke and those with the skills to train service dogs will be donating their time to assist Mr. Wyrick train Duke to assist him.
Ms. Nevills refused to return his beloved Shuma. He said this will not replace Shuma, his heart is heavy and would love Shuma to be home with him.
He says Duke will be loved.
I have to tell you, I am still so angry about Nevills and still feel she should return Shuma. She is wrong just flat out wrong.
I have been making some phone calls but really not much to offer at this time. Will continue to pursue this, I feel there is still much missing regarding Nevills and how she acquired Shuma.
PING
Have to say this is a sad turn of events. I mean, I am thrilled that a local resident took it upon herself to donate a pup to Mr Wyrick. Such kindness and giving nature. They type of character that Ms. Nevills needs to learn from.
Now that would be impressive.
I still feel she should do the right thing.
I do not know about you, but, when you lose a pet, it is so tough, leaving your emotions raw. Whether the dog is 14 months or 14 years, whether you have to give it to another or it passes away, it is tough. They cannot be replaced. However I do know that a new pup can help fill the void and I hope that is what Duke will for Mr. Wyrick.
I thank all in the greater KC area, their support and kindness to help Mr. Wyrick speaks volumes of the area. I am also certain that the prayers of fellow Freeper's were heard and comforted the Wyrick family.
This is a bitter sweet ending to a sad situation. While you're happy for the replacement pup you're still saddened over the loss of this families beloved pet, friend and helper.
Though I sympathize with this person's dilemna, I remember how Freepers/Lurkers wanted Terri Schiavo killed with extreme prejudice...
Maybe that is wrong with our society. Blue dogs getting elected in Louisiana to political positions...
I always put humans first... I don't vote for no blue dog... Who dat?
Actually that woman is worse than those who supported the death of Terri...they at least thought that Terri was brain dead and wanted to die. They thought they were doing the right thing.
This woman is just a heartless hag with no excuse for her behavior. She deserves to be shunned by society. No one in her community should have have any interaction with her until she does the right thing.
Yeah, it stinks, doesn't it? I'm sure Duke is a fine pup, but this woman is getting away with a really nasty act.
I hope Ms. Nevills' name is now mud. What a miserable excuse for a human being.
I have been hearing about this story on 980KMBZ, and seems the dog taker is not available for comment.
People like this do reap what they sow and sadly this gal has planted her own garden of brambles and thorns.
I mourn hard and for a long time when I lose a kitty...it really takes alot out of me....I still get upset over one that was stolen from me about 3 years ago now....
I agree---Cat's Rule...Dog's just drool....and smell.
I wonder how long before this woman starts complaining people are being "mean" to her and she is getting "death threats".
This is kind of solution a bureaucrat would love. It doesn't address the issue at all.
I'm glad to hear that Mr. Wyrick has a new GS, and that he will have professional help with the training. It was a generous act of kindness from the lady who donated the new pup to him, and I know he must be thankful and appreciate it very much. As he has said, Duke will be loved, but he can't replace Shuma.
Nevills' actions are incomprehensible to me. She has to be totally selfish. I say that with respect to the needs of Mr. Wyrick, but for Shuma as well. Any dog owner knows the bond and deep loyalty that develops through the years, and I know Shuma must long to see her family, even if the Nevills' provide a good home. We've all heard the stories of pets who have been separated from their human familes, and have travelled long distances, and gone through many hardships to find them.
She should return Shuma to the Wyricks. At least, Mr. Wyrick should be allowed to see her and reassure her that she hasn't been abandoned.
The fact that Ms. Nevills doesn't have the same sensibilities expressed by pet lovers who have heard Shuma's story tells me that she is not a pet lover.
What double-edged news...I'm, of course, pleased that Ms. Draper did such a kindhearted deed...I know that the puppy, Duke, will also be a wonderful companion for Mr. Wyrick, but that just does not make up for the heartache.
Dang that Ms. Neville! The gift of Duke will just make it easier for her to dig her heels in even deeper and not budge when it comes to returning Shuma.
I will continue to e-mail the T.V. station and ask them to continue to follow the story. Shuma should RIGHTFULLY be returned to the Wyrick family.
P.S. Duke is adorable...a friendly energetic little guy that anybody would find easy to love. Thank you, Ms. Draper!
More than ever, I appreciate your efforts FMC.
On another Shuma thread, someone posted that this woman, Nevills, was looking on dog boards for breeding stock. Shuma being 14 months instead of 14 hears means that she just got a "free" breeding dog.
Of course, Terri Schiavo tombstone now reads: passed from this earth in 1990. In other words, Michael Schiavo thinks she was dead in 1990...
