Permit denied for controversial Islamic school in Stockton

Stockton -- San Joaquin County supervisors have blocked a plan to build an Islamic school south of Lodi that has been caught up in a federal terrorism investigation.

Federal authorities deported two Islamic religious leaders to Pakistan, alleging they planned to use the school as a terrorist recruiting center.

The religious leaders have not been charged with a crime, but a federal investigation in Lodi led to charges against Hamid Hayat, 23, of Lodi, who is accused of attending a terror training camp in Pakistan, and his father, Umer Hayat, 47, who is charged with lying to the FBI about his son's activities.

Supporters of the Farooqia Islamic Center denied any terrorist connections, and supervisors said their decision Tuesday was based on neighbors' concerns the center would create traffic congestion and damage the quality of life in the rural area.

The five supervisors voted unanimously to overturn the county Planning Commission's July approval for construction of an elementary school for 50 students, a worship hall and a community center on 18 acres.

Sooner or later the question must be entertained within US mainstream society at large regarding the legitimacy of Islam the religion itself and its undeniable connection to worldwide terrorism, anti-semitism, and global crime syndicates, without the obfuscation of freedom of religion, racial profiling, freedom of speech, or other false canard used to deflect the issue and point blame elsewhere by the enemies of freedom and democracy.

In our small town in PA, there's an Islamic center, school and mosque. Ethnic makeup of the town is over 96% Caucasian, fwiw. The Muslims are not homegrown, and they're of a fundamentalist persuasion. Some of the teachers had to flee the state due to charges of sexual misconduct with the students. But nobody ever wonders if they're terrorists. It's not a wondering kind of town. ;)

Maybe partial sanity. The issue wasn't the mosque itself but where it was proposed, which was out in the countryside near Lodi. The controversy over the arrested imam and others didn't help but overall they weren't treated any different than all other religions who want to build a church/school complex out in farmland where it isn't zoned.

Absolutely. My church had to sell some property it acquired because the locals didn't want a church built nearby. We ended up in another part of town. Another church in town wanted to build in the industrial zone and couldn't get approval. It then tried to use an abandoned JC Penney building downtown but the merchants there fought it tooth and nail and while it finally got conditional approval, by then the deal fell apart and the building is back to being abandoned. The fact is, churches are not welcome right now in California, no matter where you want to put it.

In this case, the muslims will claim it was prejudice but really they were treated the same as every other faith. Will the ACLU be there for them? I think this is a real quandary for it because it hasn't been there for the other religions. And the area I am talking about is San Joaquin County, where this proposed mosque/school was voted down.
