Well, over his career, this was a one-party state. All Democrat. The Republican takeover didn't even begin until the mid-90s, and we didn't even gain control of the legislature until 2002.

So, he attacked some Rats that he didn't agree with when they were the only game in town. Very impressive.

Earle simply prosecuted conservative Dems, most of whom, like Texas Governor Rick Perry, have now switched to the Republican Party.
