Dozens of animals rescued after Hurricane Katrina in Louisiana and Mississippi are now safe in Central Florida and looking for homes, according to a Local 6 News report.
About 40 dogs and cats were rescued from the flooded Gulf Coast after the storm and arrived Tuesday in Seminole County.
Volunteers working for Pet Rescue By Judy took truckloads of animal supplies to Louisiana over the weekend and then came back with truckloads of homeless pets.
The pets that arrived in Tuesday are purebreds and mixes and all need new homes and owners.
"They have been by themselves and are used to human companionship," Tuscawilla Oak Animal Hospital worker Janis Fullenwider said. "They crave that right now and they are really out of their element and just want companionship."

Well, I certainly hope they're checking against a list of missing pets before adopting them out
I hope they check too, how about all those pet owners who are looking for their beloved Spot?
Don't adopt them out, look for the owners.
Amidst the chaos, here's hoping that ALL of the scared, lost animals will find loving homes, whether with their original people or not.
Now, there are other cases where owners themselves called and reported the location of the animal for rescuers to go find. I would imagine these are not those dogs. These are dogs found wandering the streets, or tied to fences and abandoned.
I am an experienced Belgian Shepherd care-taker.
Have two who carefully herd me and my DH at the moment. I will take in any coat variety of Belgian Sheps, because that is my expertise, and the two who currrently take care of me, the "alpha", will have minimun trouble adjusting to to the play-style of other Belgians.
They all speak the same language, you know....
I keep thinking about the little boy that had his dog snatched out of his arms. The pet rescuers were going to try to find "Snowball". Have any of yall heard any follow up?
How is that response to the new Bill presented in the House to mandate animal shelters during hurriciane crises?
Did it pass? It's a major factor ,in people not going to shelters.

A foster home for a period up to six months before adoption becomes final, with a guarantee of reuniting the pet with a found owner, would be the best situation for the animals. It would give them the human companionship so essential to their well being and yet make it possible for an owner to reclaim them. The folks in New Orleans, in particular, are a long time away from being settled in their homes again. Many of them long for their pets but have no way to care for them at present. Bless all the noble people who have spent the last month trying to save and help all the defenseless little animals.

My wife and I have adopted a maltese pup that our vet here in Spring TX had gotten from LA. Her right rear leg was broken and surgically repaired with a metal plate. And of course, we have named her Katrina.
I noticed on http://www.petfinder.com, that there were pets up for adoption that were hurricane rescues.
They are holding the pets for 6-8 weeks before adopting them out, just to give those looking for their lost pets a chance to find them.
But there also are pets on there, that have been turned over by the hurricane victims themselves because they just don't have the means to care for them anymore.
I hope there will be an effort first to reunite them with their owners before giving them away.
