Terri Schiavo's parents and siblings are writing a book about their struggle in the epic end-of-life case that divided the country and captured the attention of everyone from the Pope John Paul II to President Bush, their publisher said Tuesday. The yet untitled memoir by parents Bob and Mary Schindler, brother Bobby Schindler and sister Suzanne Vitadamo will be published in March to coincide with the first anniversary of the death of the brain-damaged woman, whose feeding tube was removed after her husband won a court order to do so.
"This book is the moving story of an ordinary family caught up in extraordinary circumstances, and it will set the record straight for the first time," said Jamie Raab, senior vice president and publisher at Warner Books in New York.
The Schindlers' book is likely to compete for space on the shelves with a memoir by Terri Schiavo's husband, Michael, who fought his in-laws in court for eight years to end her life, arguing she would not have wanted to be kept alive in what doctors called a persistent vegetative state. Michael Schiavo said he is collaborating on the book with author Michael Hirsh. The 280-page book is titled "Terri: the Truth," and is planned for release in March by Dutton Publishing.
The Schindlers will donate profits from the book to a foundation they established when they were fighting to save Terri's life, Warner Books said. The foundation now is dedicated to protecting severely disabled people.
The press release announcing the book said Terri Schiavo's parents and siblings "fought simply as a caring family and never the ideological zealots depicted by the mainstream media.
"For the first time ever, they will share their love and sorrow, joy and pain, and some shocking revelations as they honor Terri's life, mourn her death, and finally tell the whole story, the true story, of an innocent woman who met a needlessly premature death."
Yea, and I've got some waterside property to sell you. The fact is that they're both cashing in. After all, it's the American way.
Changed your opinion? Really? You honestly didn't see this coming?
Imagine my surprise. You'll have to imagine.
"For the first time ever, they will share their love and sorrow, joy and pain, and some shocking revelations
Mein Gott im Himmell, you mean there's something they haven't shared yet? as they honor Terri's life, mourn her death, and finally tell the whole story, the true story, of an innocent woman who met a needlessly premature death."
Although I didn't agree with them I felt for them from the standpoint of a parent. As a parent I could never seek to make cash off of my child's death.
Get over it.
BTW, I'm not going to hit abuse over your veiled profanity.
(That was so Christian of you.)
I may add, the organization I work for is helping them out with this foundation. You have no clue what you are talking about.
You don't know diddly squat. Go look up who all of the officers of the Foundation are. It's the entire Schindler family.
The largest one possible, and with Other Peoples' Money, naturally.
How big is your cut?
People on here are stating as FACT that they will pay themselves huge salaries out of the charity. That is speculation, not FACT! Yes, it is a possibility, but it has NOT happened.
You think they're doing this for free? Even those profits are going to their own foundation. They're on the foundation's board. They couldn't find an existing foundation? Kind of curious, don't you think? Stop being a sucker.
Have we seen the check stubs the Schindlers have wrote to themselves or are you just speculating that they are going to make a bunch of money?
They're not making a dime.
I'd like to know that myself!
Exactly! I would hate to get just MS idea of what happened, colored with lies and 1/2 truths. My mother taught me that when there are 2 stories, the truth lies somewhere in the middle usually. We need both stories.
I wonder how much Michael will make off his book? Is he donating any to charity?
Yes, why don't they just get over their daughters death already? She was just wasting money and was of no good to anybody...Everybody knows that Michael Schiavo was completely innocent and loved Terri so much he shacked up with another woman and had children by her. It hurt Michael so much that he terminated her life.
The fact of the matter is that she communicated her final wishes to Michael in her 20's (when everyone is planning for their eventual demise) that if she was ever incapacitated for an unknown reason, but not on a respirator, and could not feed herself, she wanted to be starved and dehydrated to a euphoric death.
