Terri Schiavo's parents and siblings are writing a book about their struggle in the epic end-of-life case that divided the country and captured the attention of everyone from the Pope John Paul II to President Bush, their publisher said Tuesday. The yet untitled memoir by parents Bob and Mary Schindler, brother Bobby Schindler and sister Suzanne Vitadamo will be published in March to coincide with the first anniversary of the death of the brain-damaged woman, whose feeding tube was removed after her husband won a court order to do so.
"This book is the moving story of an ordinary family caught up in extraordinary circumstances, and it will set the record straight for the first time," said Jamie Raab, senior vice president and publisher at Warner Books in New York.
The Schindlers' book is likely to compete for space on the shelves with a memoir by Terri Schiavo's husband, Michael, who fought his in-laws in court for eight years to end her life, arguing she would not have wanted to be kept alive in what doctors called a persistent vegetative state. Michael Schiavo said he is collaborating on the book with author Michael Hirsh. The 280-page book is titled "Terri: the Truth," and is planned for release in March by Dutton Publishing.
The Schindlers will donate profits from the book to a foundation they established when they were fighting to save Terri's life, Warner Books said. The foundation now is dedicated to protecting severely disabled people.
The press release announcing the book said Terri Schiavo's parents and siblings "fought simply as a caring family and never the ideological zealots depicted by the mainstream media.
"For the first time ever, they will share their love and sorrow, joy and pain, and some shocking revelations as they honor Terri's life, mourn her death, and finally tell the whole story, the true story, of an innocent woman who met a needlessly premature death."
Uh huh. I think post #267 is for you and your buddies.
Wow, what a stinger. I'm wounded so deeply.
I've gotta head home. Later.
Why don't you show us all what a real stinger is? Say some of the witty things you say over at CP. Or are you afraid of the consequences?
I did not state, or make that write, that a state law COULD be in direct conflict with the Constitution (or the Bill of Rights for that matter, I wrote that I had always understood that a state could NOT make a LAW that conflicted with the Constitution. The FEDERAL constitution that serves as the foundations of the rule of law for this country.
The federalist papers were a group of writings meant to elucidate the constitution and to clearly separate the right of States to exercise those laws therein that spoke to the needs of that particular State. (Which is why marriage laws, etc., can differ, tax laws can differ, property laws can differ, State to State, etc.
But the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness is a guarantee, the Bill of Rights and the Constitution of the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA is the bond that ties us together and protects our right to LIFE, FREEDOM and the choice to pursue our interests.
In a DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC such as this, fallible tho it may be, that is ALL that has been claimed here.
You may be a member of the Federalist Society, if you are , my hat is off, what a WONDERFUL GROUP and if you are not, but on a mailing list from the same, as I am, it is always great exercise in enlightenment.
All three documents bind us together and form our rule of law.
And therein lies one of the problems my friend. To some here the Bill of Rights and the limitations therein always applied at the state level. It is crystal clear to any student of the Constitution it didn't until the 20th century (see the incorporation theory). It is not a stretch therefore, and the writings from multiples of the Federalists back this up, that the rest of document except in specific instances, as outlined in the document, didn't apply to the states either.
I realize the argument many have applied here is a misreading, a rather liberal one I might add, of the 14th Amendment. However by law Mrs. Schiavo received due process, due process even further than required by the Constitutional limitations by taking the case into the federal system.
And for the record, I did not, do not, and would never 'wish' for the death of another human being. I would do all that I could within Constitutional limitations to assist to prevent it. However, I am not willing (nor would I ever be) to break the Constitution for the benefit of even one life. Scalia even warned of the consequences in his decision the Cruzan decision
The doctor calculated the proper dosage. If the nurses had followed the doctors orders my husband would have had proper pain management, I wouldn't have had to tell the doctor, and the nurses wouldn't have gotten in trouble.
You spelled it out very clearly and accurately. Anyone who thinks the Declaration of Independence is nothing more than rhetoric isn't likely to agree that the Bill of Rights actually grants rights to the People, no matter how clear you are in your explanation. Nice try though.
You are a extreme moral liberal -why pretend to be anything other than what you repeatedly advocate and promote?
You are transparent...
Satan?
Yeah, well, we have that problem occasionally with that type. A few too many and they turn into wannabe organ grinders. Please pardon the delay but for the last 24 hours I've been in a biohazard containment facility getting a scrubdown by a CBW unit.
Howard got all the Cocoa Puffs out of the chandeliers well enough, but the drool puddle kept moving around, so we had to close down until the HAZMAT crew could sandblast the floor. But never fear, Wampus's Florida Room Bar and Grill will be up and running in no time. Don't miss the wet judicial robe contest this weekend, and live music by The Abnormal Foreigners!
Sorry, you're over your limit and the barmaids will have to cut you off now.
If the 'consequences' you refer to are being banned or suspended... well, I'd say I'm not afraid.
Between the two of us, one has never been banned or suspended.
That one would be me.
I did not assume you may forget your own postings...
