Driving Off Half-Tanked

It's not legal to drive half-tanked is it?
Well, yes, if you're talking about your car. (If it's you, then hang it up, Bubba, you're going down to dui gahenna.)
Going off half-tanked is a great strategy in a time of high and fluctuating gas prices. Pull into the station and only fill half the tank.
This half tank will be treated more carefully; you'll be more likely to nurse it along....maybe even do less driving.
Also, you can play the good consumer game. IF you happen to see a low priced station, you can pull in and top off at the best price, thereby rewarding that low-priced station with your business.
So, forget no-gas Sundays; boycotting Mobile; etc.
Just drive off half-tanked.

Why would you want to boycott Mobile? What did that city ever do to you?

This is complete bravo sierra. When I was an Army officer, we were informed we should always fill up at half empty so we always had a good supply in case of emergency.

There's no emergency other that trying to find ways to conserve so supplies get increased. Half-tanking it will do the trick.

My Crown Vic has a warning light at E-4 gallons. I fill it up then.

I'm going to get a segway soon. I plan on taking my first long distance road trip in November. Does anyone know of any luggage accessories? I would hate to have to carry my suitcase for the entire thousand miles.
Thanks in advance.

As an optimist, my tank is always half full.
Seriously, that just makes good sense. ;)

This is complete bravo sierra. When I was an Army officer, we were informed we should always fill up at half empty so we always had a good supply in case of emergency. That maybe true, but your carrying around a whole lot of weight in that tank, and you'll use more fuel hauling around that weight. It would be better to keep two or three 5 gallon cans of fuel, properly vented, in the garage for emergencys. We keep our vehicles about 1/4 tank or less for the weight factor, but have an emergency supply safely stored and rotated.

But it's stupid to run around with half a tank or less of gas...especially up here where there's that thing called winter...

Several posters have indicated that letting your tank go below half-empty is death to more recent car fuel pumps.
Apparently, the newer pumps use the fuel itself to cool the pump, or some such technical thing.
