TOKYO -- New-car buyers know the scent of fresh plastic, paint and upholstery, which can bring a rush of pride and consumer satisfaction.
But that unmistakable new-car smell may soon be a thing of the past, because of safety concerns.
Recent research linking it to a toxic cocktail of harmful chemicals is spurring efforts by Japanese automakers to tone down the fumes.
Toyota and other Japanese carmakers are trying to reduce cabin concentrations to within government guidelines.
The push could spur similar action by U.S. and European rivals.
I'm working on some new air freshener frangrances. One of them is called "Whiskey." The other is called "Reefer."
Well, a "new car smell" won't be a problem for me in the foreseeable future!
oh that is so sweet!!!!!
It's a scam! The car-makers know the smell gets you stoned into thinking you have a really cool vehicle. Sneaky Bastards!
I remember my first girlfriend. She was so clean that she had that new car smell.
Automatic or manual?
yes

Has anyone died from this toxic cocktail?
Just what we need the government to step in and save us from ourselves. /sarc
Ha ha, me either! But I recently replaced my car, and it's funny how the dealerships will put the fake new car smell into the new-to-me used car, as was done with the car I just purchased, and others I test drove.
I never liked 'new car smell'.
LOL!
New car smell beats an old car smell anytime.
Don't forget that Liberal favorite: "Ass"
