The flow of negative news about the administration will do much of the Democrats' work for them. Solving the party's larger intellectual and tactical contradictions will take more time. That means its leaders will have to brace themselves for more criticisms from their impatient, not-quite-so-loyal loyalists.

You know the party has a problem when even the politics of Katrina divides its members. You really know the party has a problem when they have to politicize a freaking hurricane because they have nothing else going for them.

For others, it means full-throated populism to attract lower-income social conservatives. Some favor a combination of the two, while still others worry that too much populism would drive away moderate voters in the upper middle classEJ is profiling:
lower income = social conservative
upper middle class = moderate voter

That distinction has confused me for some time now. I've been a conservative since 1971.
Does that make me a neo-conservative or a paleo-conservative?

The thing the fools like e j dionne always fail to understand is that eventually it comes down to two people. This last election it was George Bush and John Kerry, then all the democRATic propaganda in the world (see MSM articles during election cycle) won't make the difference.
When the American people get to chose a leader, substance will prevail over flim-flam almost everytime. The only recent exception was bill clintoon and the only reason he got elected is because Ross Perot split the conservative vote.
So dream on E J because when your phoney democratic candidates have to explain their anti American drivel outside the beltway, it won't be pretty. And all the lies in the world from people like you won't change the result.......

Actaully it was the SWIFT BOAT VETERANS who forced Kerry to give up the " Reporting for Duty BS " and damn near go into hiding that save Bush's bacon

The crisis faced by the Democrat party is that it has blown its chances for a comeback. After the 2004 election it could have changed direction and backed off of its anti-American and socialist positions. Instead it has continued its former behavior.
Democrats cannot come right out and sell or defend their agenda because no society in history has ever voluntarily voted in socialism.
Democrats must rely instead on lies, innuendo and a pretense that they are "moderates." They pee up against your leg and tell you it's rain.
Why so many people in the media, who enjoy all of the benefits this nation can offer, have taken the socialists' side and supported Democrats will be left for future sociologists to examine.

Thats even worse (at least according to the left).

I am not so sure of that (which is why we must fight even harder). Sweden, France, the Netherlands, even modern Germany, etc. seem to have voted themselves into socialism. I am not even sure about England and Canada. If they aren't there yet, they are awfully close.

No-brainer...on conservative websites posing as NEO-conservatives!Sir, you don't know how right you are!
Reagan decades before has switched parties, finding more in common with Republicans. Perdue having more in common with Georgia Republicans did the same. When Georgia elected Sonny Perdue (R - former D) as governor, it began a tide of change. Unfortunately, one of the results of that shift in the electorate is that Dims swap parties solely to get re-elected, NOT due to an adoption of Republican values. The same occured with federal Republicans.
As you surmised, FR has more than it's fair share on neo-cons - posers if you will. Traditional liberals, Republican pork is good, expanded social programs legislated by 'pubbies is good, imperialism is demanded. Non-protection of the borders, advocacy of amnesty for ILLEGAL immigrants, MORE federal programs. Many a founder is rolling in their grave.
