And people think I'm crazy. Those idiot teachers need to be whacked over the head with a baseball bat a few times.

Wonder if $200,000,000 in scholarships to the Archdiocese or other parochial schools might have been a better choice?

This is the sort of thing where the only sane response would be "May not help, but certainly couldn't hurt."

This story is not surprising. One of my former PhD students, an experienced high school principal in the South Bronx, tried to start a charter school in New York a few years ago. Although it was legal, the unions blocked it. He finally opened one in New Jersey.

You have to keep in mind that our public schools have three purposes:

1) To provide generous pay and benefits to unionized teachers and administrators;

2) To provide a corps of politically active union supporters and campaigners for Democrat politicians;

3) To educate children.

The third goal, which one might think should come first, comes a very distant third.

A slight error in #3

Should read:

3) To educate indoctrinate children.

It's not about the kids....it's about the money.

I would say indoctrinate our kids, not educate them.

"Those idiot teachers need to be whacked over the head with a baseball bat a few times."

It's not the teacher's fault. They want the students to be good in class, they want the students to study hard and get good grades and they want their schools to produce high quality students.

I'm not but I wouldn't hesitate to donate. They have great schools.

State Democrats cowered before the union,

One of my poor state's biggest problems. Wouldn't be half as bad if the GOP didn't follow suit.

Three cheers for Thompson and Bing for understanding the real problem and doing something about it!

Yes, I'm afraid you're right. There are some teachers in the profession who genuinely want to educate kids, but they are getting rarer.

They are closing our Catholic schools in Detroit to pay for the lawyer fees for the Diocese.

Even when businessmen come in to save them according to Fox2News.

4) To teach children how to pass a skills test

That's sad. Detroit's Catholic schools have made great contributions. Look at me. :-) (Gesu and Catholic Central grad)
