U.S. President George Bush said Monday he will release supplies from the nation's strategic oil reserve to deal with hurricane-related fuel shortfalls.
Speaking at the Department of Energy, Bush said Hurricane Rita's strike Saturday missed much of refining capacity along the Texas coast, but that the effect of it following last month's Hurricane Katrina was bound to affect supply.
There was about 5.4 million barrels per day that were shut in as a result of Rita and Katrina, Bush said. A million of it is back up already, and we expect another 1.8 million barrels a day to get back on line relatively quickly.
He said the weekend storm would also affect the ability to get gasoline to markets, as three of four major pipelines supplying gasoline to the Midwest and East Coast were damaged by Rita, but he said efforts were under way to return to higher capacity.
The Strategic Petroleum Reserve is the government's emergency stockpile of crude oil that was created in the aftermath of the 1973-74 oil embargo.
I wish Bush would pull on his overalls and build the USA some more refining capacity.
"I wish Bush would pull on his overalls and build the USA some more refining capacity."
Sorry, the congress is what killed private-industry's ability to make more refineries for 30 years... We are suffering the consequences now.
Come on...you're ruining the "Bush's FAULT" theme of Free Republic.
"Come on...you're ruining the "Bush's FAULT" theme of Free Republic"
Darn it... I forgot... IT IS ALL BUSH'S FAULT!!!!!!
(Feel better now?)
Do the politicians think that we are stupid, obviously, they passed an energy bill that addressed none of the real problems and have no real solutions although there are many.
No more of this RAH RAH BS, do something.
And I wish you would have some criticism for the true culprits of the refinery shortage, the enviorwhackos.
That maybe asking to much though since you seem to enjoy wallowing in Bush bashing.
Sorry, Dane. In this case, my post was meant as sarcasm. I figured I didn't need a /sarcasm tag on it because any human with a > room temperature IQ should know that Bush doesn't pull on overalls and construct refineries all by himself ;-)
I would like to know the geographic coordinates of the three damaged pipelines that supplies gasoline to the midwest and east coast? What was the extent of the damage? Is there gasoline spilling from these pipelines? And finally, why is gasoline selling for $3.11 per gallon at the Greenbank Store in Greenbank, Washington? Are Washington state pipelines also affected by these damaged pipelines in the south?
THe problem is not with the oil supply. It's a refinery problem. This announcement by the administration is daft.
President Bush has apparently decided to cater to the Stuck on Stupid vote.
They have to pay back the SOR once supplies start flowing regularly.
We all know the blame Bush hating crowd doesn't have a "room temperature IQ" collectively, so we easily could overlook the sarcasm.
Why?
JEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEZZZZZZZ
This kinda crud just makes me want to go back to snail mail and typewriters.
Crud on a stick!!!!!
Consider this--
Congress is the industry's lap dog. Looked at from that point of view, all Congress accomplished was to cut out the little guy and leave the entire field to the established firms. The big ones are fine with the situation, and they could build more facilities if they wanted to. In fact, they do anyway to meet the new blend requirements, something else they are fine with.
Got that right. The oil trusts were broken up, but there are other ways to do the same thing. Monopoly? What is that? Doesn't matter if everybody is in on it.
>>>"Well, I blieve Bush is "Lending" oil from the SOR to the refineries to make up for the disruption in oil deliveries to them"<<<
Not "ONE" "SINGLE" "SOLITARY" "GALLON" will flow from the Stategic Oil Supply, None!
We will threatan to unleash Millions of Gallons /Barrels and flood the market with Jimmy Carters "ACE" when our True ACE is our own untapped resources and we only need leadership to undo what Clinton did, Stroke of the Pen, Law of the Land!
I still remember that "CLEAN COAL" that Klintoon made un-available with a stroke of the pen, GW could undo it the same way, ANWR and California aren't really that much more difficult, then there is the Florida Gulf Coast.
If we have TRUE Leadership, not a lame duck trying to set up a Florida Governor for the Presidency we could / should get much accomplished in the next three years.+
Just my thoughts, have a nice day...
TT
What you have suggested is clearly the best solution.
