I could very well be wrong, but I think I remember from a class long ago, that this was (in some cultures) a rule, you did not marry until the pregnancy. That is what the period of betrothal or engagement to be married is for. In particular, if you are the first son of royalty or wealth, it is important to find out if the marriage will have issue to inheirit the family titles or money.
