The Army is using Blackhawk helicopters (search) to search for thousands of cattle feared stranded in the high water left behind by Hurricane Rita. A spokesman for the Louisiana Cattlemen's Association says since all the coastal parishes had cattle, the number in trouble could be more than 30,000.

There are reports that more than 4,000 cattle may have been killed in Cameron Parish (search) alone, where ranchers on horseback struggled to herd the animals into corrals attached to pickup trucks in the aftermath of Hurricane RitaIn the AFTERMATH? Will LA ever learn? Didn't we all know for about a week that Rita was headed towards them? At the first sign of trouble, take a few loads into auction. Then head the rest to high ground or load up at least the bulls and move them to friend's ranches on higher ground. Neighbors here started sheltering horses the Monday before.

Corrals attached to pickup trucks??? That must be a new thing...or a Southern thing. Or maybe the city slicker reporter did not recognize a cattle trailer when she saw one.
I hope they are able to save those who made it this long. If you have a spare prayer around, you might direct it upward for these ranchers and the animals they care for.

Everyone else seems to have no trouble milking the federal government, the military shouldn't have any problem either.
