Military authority at local levels?

Bush indicated that he wants more authority for the armed forces in natural disasters. The military is barred by law from performing any domestic law enforcement functions

Bush first broached that idea in a speech to the nation from New Orleans last week.

The president said he wants to examine whether the Defense Department should take the lead in a natural disaster "of a certain size" as it would after any terrorist attack. "That's going to be a very important consideration for Congress to think about," he said.

I saw that meeting on TV.

It was about relief and rescue efforts, not about law enforcement.

Well isn't that a fine idea!

Just when I thought we couldn't more resemble a Banana Republic, el Presidente once again rises to the occasion to prove me wrong.

Surely King George should get some new clothes to signify the new authority he'll have as Commander in Chief of a standing army policing civilians!

Maybe he should try these, they are traditional for the role!

Coming soon, Great Big George statues in public. Hooray for our Glorious Leader!!!

Get rid of local police and build State Police. Eliminate the layers. If the feds are going to be involved then local police is just another money level. Aren't the State Police called on for crime solving abilities because they have the resources? I can live without saying hi to my local officer whose dispatched from another city.

JENNIFER LOVEN, AP

Note of warning. She is married to a DNC member and Democrat Party Activist. Despite repeated reports to AP about her clear conflict of intrest, AP still is using her as their primary political reporter. Take anything she "reports" with very large grains of salt.

Ok, let's see if I got this straight. A month ago they were all squealling that the Feds were NOT doing enough, so when Bush suggest a solution they are all squealing cause now he is DOING TOO MUCH? Face it, the bulk of the Moveon.org "conservatives" will squeal no matter what Bush does. They have made themselves irrelevant.

Imagine Bill or Hillary with the ability to use the military domestically. We're already on the slippery slope, I think it would be more prudent to throw sand in front of us than grease.

Just my $0.02 worth.

Best Regards

Sergio

What a stuck on stupid idea...

We don't need the military so readily available & able walk into civilian issues. Although, I'm sure a President Hillary would think the idea wonderful.

We need less bureacracy so that local governements can run as smoothly as the military.

I'd love to see him come out in a uniform more befitting the Commander-in-Chief of the Greatest Military the World Has Ever Seen. I think he should sport a pair of ivory handled pistolas, what say you?

I'm not going to let fingerpointing distract from the issue at hand. A lot of people dropped the ball. So there is pressure to "Do Something".

So instead of reforming FEMA or making sure the National Guard is available for its core mission, the proposed "solution" is to remove one of the defining characteristics of a free country.

Well I'm here to SCREAM HELL NO!!!

This idea SUCKS. AND I DON'T CARE WHO THOUGHT IT UP

Those would be a fine touch. Though I hear a personalized antique rifle is all the rage among tin pot dictators lately:

Scary isn't it. I look at my kid some nights as she sleeps and a bit of sadness creeps in, I feel that my parents' generation did a lot of damage. I feel my generation merely waits in the wings to do a lot more. I have thought about what it may lead to.

The time when we will all have to look inside and decide what we stand for, what we will do anything for what is worth having and preserving is either upon us or very soon will be.

Just think of the big smile upon the face of she-who-must-not-be-named when all of this power is concentrated in the Cherry-Blossom Throne - the one she plans to occupy in a mere three years.

This is not a good idea. State and local governments have been running effective disaster recovery operations (with help from FEMA) for years and just because a couple halfwits in Louisiana can't do their job the federal government needs to?

I am starting to forget what the Republican party stands for. It use to be something along the lines of decrease spending, less government, a strict interpretation of the Constitution, lower taxes and many other things. Did I miss a memo or something, what the hell is going on?

what the hell is going on?

The Republican Party has been hijacked by opportunistic megalomaniacs.

This is the single worst idea any American politician has come up with in recent history.
