The No. 2 al Qaeda leader in Iraq was killed Sunday night, U.S. officials say. Abu Azzam, reportedly the deputy to Abu Musab al Zarqawi, was shot during a house rain in Baghdad, according to Pentagon officials.
As the aide to Zarqawi, Azzam was reportedly in control of financing foreign fighters coming into Iraq, CBS News national security correspondent David Martin reports.
According to Pentagon officials coalition troops raided the house in response to a tip. When Azzam opened fire, these officials say, he was killed with troops' return fire.

"Are you sure he wasn't the #3 guy? I'll take any number of terrorists meeting up with the same fate."
It was a "consultant"

What?!?!?! They LIED to me! Durring the interview, they said the last guy who had that job got promoted to "Producer" at something called the "al Queda Network" (which I think is that crazy Spanish channel way up on the dial.)
Owl_Eagle(If what I just wrote makes you sad or angry,
I bet it's tough to get life insurance when you have to put down "Zarqawi's Top Aid" in the occupation box..
On the Somaliland capture. I believe it was Fazul Abdallah Mohammad, an AQ operative from the Comoro Islands, who was captured. The US had a $25 million bounty on his head. Negotiations will take some time.
Seeking a high level executive for a world-renowned multinational operation. Must have experience in reducing human resources. Relocation a must, with travel 95% of the time. Be prepared to work long hours with difficult communication. Excellent pay and benefits for the right man. No life insurance. Women and infidels need not apply.
There is a lot of room for advancement.
They advance to the top, and then get killed by our Troops.
Talk about your Peter Principle.
So many #2 Al Qaeda honcho aides at that.
I mean whats the recruitment slogan. See Iraq and get killed in 15 minutes.
How there can be anyone unemployed in Iraq with the amount of jobs Zarqawi offers?
It's an "AIDES" epidemic!
Abu Azzam was the putative heir to Shaykh Azzam who was mentor to Osama Bin Laden. The loss of anyone named Azzam would be a terrific blow to the terrorists.
Is this Aide # 3,546 or 3,547?
Zarqawi has more aides than San Fransicko:

Seems like every two weeks a "top" Zarquawi aide is killed. How many dozens of "top" aides does he have? How about just not making any such announcements until he himself is dead.
People are jaded. It would be like if they took out Rummy or Abizade.
IT hurts his logistics and leadership bench.
How many of these No.2 guys are there?
Y'all echoed my thoughts, too.
Too bad he doesn't have AIDS.
On his pile of crap, every dung beetle is a king.
Nope, this guy was #2
