The No. 2 al Qaeda leader in Iraq was killed Sunday night, U.S. officials say. Abu Azzam, reportedly the deputy to Abu Musab al Zarqawi, was shot during a house rain in Baghdad, according to Pentagon officials.
As the aide to Zarqawi, Azzam was reportedly in control of financing foreign fighters coming into Iraq, CBS News national security correspondent David Martin reports.
According to Pentagon officials coalition troops raided the house in response to a tip. When Azzam opened fire, these officials say, he was killed with troops' return fire.

great minds, as they say...
I didn't know that. Thanks for posting the info. I just read an article about Friedman in Fortune magazine, where they talk about how "revered" he is. Apparently he has a best-selling book out right now. I figured if he is "revered", then he must be liberal.
There was actually criticism on this thread because the pentagon announced his kill.
Then there was the continuation of the running joke that every announced major kill is in reality just some low-level "aide" who happened to pick a number or answer a job ad.
"great minds, as they say..."
The Z-Man must be going nuts. We just keep knocking em off.
Some people are just here to hear themselves bloviate. This whole concept of making jokes over our guys killing terrorists has struck a nerve with me as well. I like a joke as well as the next guy, but there's a time and a place for everything. If you want to joke, head over to a Cindy Sheehan thread. To make light of the great work our guys are doing in Iraq is almost sickening to me. I hope the people who joke about this take a minute to sit back and think about what they are saying.
He was a bad guy. He shot at our troops. He is dead.
There will be no trial and he won't be released from Abu Ghraib in a few months.
He will be buried and forgotten in a few days, just like tens of thousands of his buddies. And he will cause no more problems.
Whatever he was in the organization, he is not doing it anymore. It was a good day. Congratulations troops.
Please see the first paragraph of my post #188.
She actually had Donald Rumsfeld on last Thurs or Fri and was telling him what a lousy PR job they were doing. She suggested it to him. He seemed suprised for a moment and then said it was a good idea they would consider. Hmmmm...he's a busy man but surely people around him know they are losing the PR game just because they are not playing.
Put yourself in a soldiers shoes. Think about going out and risking your life to kill this terrorist scum. You get him in a very successful mission and you are overjoyed. Then read some of the posts in this thread.
"oh another one.. wake me up when we get #1"
If ya ain't got something good to say....
This should be the number one story and headline in all real American newscasts!
~Scott~
Are you series?
Number 2 should be number 1?
I think DR probably thinks PR stands for Puerto Rican.
Know what I wish? That someone is making a matrix of what information leads to the next group of terrorists. That would just be fun to walk through and read the connections.
Must be something like acid rain.
a house rain
Hurricane involved?
time to hand out the $2000 vouchers and assign blame.
....."or better yet, Go start my car......"
"..and have a bite of one of my scrumptious dates while you are at it. No really, you first."
Just once I want to hear they snuffed several flunkies...
This says it very accurately - The shooters down wind have been hunting him specifically for some time - This was a big hit -
