The No. 2 al Qaeda leader in Iraq was killed Sunday night, U.S. officials say. Abu Azzam, reportedly the deputy to Abu Musab al Zarqawi, was shot during a house rain in Baghdad, according to Pentagon officials.

As the aide to Zarqawi, Azzam was reportedly in control of financing foreign fighters coming into Iraq, CBS News national security correspondent David Martin reports.

According to Pentagon officials coalition troops raided the house in response to a tip. When Azzam opened fire, these officials say, he was killed with troops' return fire.

They always make these announcements. "Zarqawi's top aide!", "his #2!", "his driver", "his favorite pig and sex partner". Tell the pentagon to tell us when he's really dead and I'll listen.

Don't bother "us" with all the details pentagon?

No, don't bother you with all the details. Speaking for myself, I'll take this information.

Good! I would be happier if it was Zarqawi though.

ahhhhhhhh, you didn't like joking around? apparently you didn't find any humor in the 275th2ndaide.

The Azzam kill was a big kill. He was not the "275th 2nd aide" killed. If you knew anything about who Azzam was, you would realize that the humor is stoopid.

The depressing thing about this story is right here:

U.S. and Iraqi authorities freed 500 detainees from the notorious Abu Ghraib prison on Monday in a goodwill gesture to Sunnis ahead of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan. After a brief ceremony outside the prison on the outskirts of Baghdad, the 500 freed detainees left the area on public buses. They were the first of 1,000 to be freed before Ramadan begins next week, the U.S. military said. Abu Ghraib gained international notoriety after U.S. military personnel running the prison were charged with humiliating and assaulting detainees there.

I put in funny posts sometimes because it is an alleviation of the horrors of this war and fear of terrorism. It's black humor that all close knit groups have. It's a way to deal with the realities that our troops are doing a great job, but we hurt when they get hurt and there is always that tension till they all come home.

I agree that our troops are doing FANTASTIC under the most difficult circumstances. What I am very upset about and have been throughout this war is the absolutely lousy, horrible PR that the adminsitration has with telling the American people how well we are doing!

Laura Ingram had an expert on the Iraqi situation and he had an excellant suggestion. The adminsitration should have a lead guy for the administration ( that is not a representative from the Pentagon ) to be on the ground in Iraq and give DAILY or at least every other day reports on how well our troops are doing.

I'd already seen that, but thanks, Cap.

Some of us don't 'remember'...some of us actually gave birth, raised, and love beyond compare the very GI (or Marine) that has his life on the line to take this guy out. Thanks for the reminder. I'd almost forgotten. Have a great day!

This should have been implemented over a year ago - Our warriors are winning on the ground - fighting 24/7 - the Administration has to make sure they are winning the PR battle being waged back home Vs the MSM / DEM's - (currently they are not holding up their end).

What I mean by that is there is not the intensity I want to see out of the WH (and GOP) about the telling of our successes. On the whole the majority of the public fully support the GWOT - including Iraq - When the facts are presented clearly to them -

However the Administration is losing the spin war -

I could not agree more with you!!! the total lack of PR by the Bush Admin makes me sick. And please, everyone, let's not pass this off as "Well, the MSM won't let us."

The Demise of Abu Azzam

By Bill Roggio
Al Qaeda in Iraq’s leadership suffers another blow. Sheikh Abdullah Abu Azzam al-Iraqi, the organization's number two in command, has been killed by Coalition forces in Baghdad during a raid after the Coalition received a tip on his location. That the Coalition found him indicates excellent actionable intelligence was available, and that he was in Baghdad indicates he may have been leading the recent spate of attacks in the capitol. Any documentation found in Azzam’s possession may greatly assist in uncovering further al Qaeda leaders and cells.

While the report indicates Azzam was the chief financier for al Qaeda in Iraq, he has a longer pedigree than just a moneyman. Azzam was a native Iraqi and a member of Zarqawi’s original terrorist group Jamaat al-Tawhid wa'l-Jihad. He was a ruthless al Qaeda commander in the Anbar province who was directly responsible for murdering government officials in the region during the summer of 2004.

When it was believed Zarqawi was on his deathbed last spring, intelligence officials suspected Azzam was one of several candidates to succeed Zarqawi. Of the nine likely candidates, three have been killed - Suleiman Khalid Darwish, another longtime Zarqawi aide and senior member of al-Tawhid wa'l-Jihad, or captured - Abu Talha, al Qaeda’s commander in Mosul and former leader of Ansar al-Islam. Talha’s network in northern Iraq has been all but dismantled.

Azzam was no small player in jihad in Iraq. He was an experienced and ruthless killer, who as a native Iraqi understood the culture and context of Iraq greater than the foreign jihadis in country. His contacts are likely to be top notch. He will need to be replaced, and his replacement will have less influence and experience than his predecessor. Destroying al Qaeda in Iraq is a laborious process, but one that can be accelerated by taking out vital leaders and middle managers.
