Fire union dumps O'Connor, backs Republican for mayor Monday, September 26, 2005

By Rich Lord, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

The union representing Pittsburgh firefighters has endorsed Republican Joe Weinroth's bid for mayor.

International Association of Fire Fighters Local 1 President Joe King said the decision of the union's political committee was unanimous, and was made late Friday. "It's probably the first time, that I remember, that the fire union has backed a Republican candidate for mayor," said King.

The local supported Democrat Bob O'Connor in the May primary. But O'Connor refused to meet with them until after the Nov. 8 general election, King said.

"After is too late," King said.

Weinroth said the endorsement is the first he's gotten from a labor union.

"It brings an enormous amount of momentum," he said. He said he made no promises to the union but said that he would "save money in other areas" before cutting public safety spending.

O'Connor's spokesman did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The firefighters are notorious for voting as a bloc and are sometimes given credit for Mayor Tom Murphy's narrow 2001 Democratic primary victory over O'Connor.

That the IAFF is backing a Republican is big news. If the R had a chance at becoming Mayor of Pittsburgh, this would be bigger news.

Outrageous fire fighter contracts are one of the (many) reasons that Pittsburgh is a financial mess. Something like $1.5 billion in debt....

Weinroth will be lucky to break 35%. No rip on him - that's just the way the numbers are in Stiller town...

I am sure they will reverse their choice once the national and the local union organizers have a talk with them.

"It's probably the first time, that I remember, that the fire union has backed a Republican candidate for mayor,"

The workingman's Town has been overwhelming Democrat forever and yet conservative. Anybody that actually wanted to be Mayor would register D whether he was conservative or liberal. Registration was about 4-1 D

I dunno ... I think the time is ripe for understanding how important it is to have a competent mayor in time of trouble. If the endorsement is real and not just a fit of pique over the meeting brush-off, there could be some pretty powerful first-responder adverts that would get a lot of people thinking.

It might be small, but I love seeing trouble in my enemy's tent.

Gee, and I was just perfecting a new campaign slogan for Bob: "Stuck On Stupid? Vote O'Connor"
