I hope this post makes sense and is apropos to FReeping.
One of the well-qualified women out at the hospital is considering going to work at the Naval Medical Center San Diego. She has two young children and a spouse who is now disabled. Therefore, money is a big factor in her move. She is a brand new proud citizen to the US and this job opportunity is a step up from her present position.
Due to the many horror stories about high rental prices, traffic and some bad neighborhoods coming out of San Diego area she has reservations about taking the job. However, a Navy retiree at the hospital says San Diego is a great place to live and bring up a family.
Therefore, she needs help in finding a suitable affordable apartment in the San Diego area. Have checked the internet such as Rent.com, Apartments.com, and Apartment Guide.com. However, there is much information that these Web sites do not give a person new to the area.
I am asking any local San Diego FReepers to help by making suggestions on moderately priced two bedroom apartments in good neighborhoods, $500.00 to $1,000.00 per month. Best location for travel to and from Naval Medical Center SD. I am told that San Diego has a very good bus system. Apartments located in neighborhoods with good schools for five and six year old children.
She did find a moderately priced apartment but one of the Doctors told her that it was located in a not so good neighborhood.
So again, if you can help, it would be greatly appreciated.

Huh.... I'm looking forward to seeing what people have to say about this. I'm living in Orange County, and would venture to say that two bedroom apartments can't be gotten for under $1,000 a month here at all, unless you live in the worst part of OC. Even there I don't think it's possible. But perhaps SD is different.
Ping to FReeper's question about safe affordable rental areas in San Diego.

We own a condo in a nice neighborhood, 1000sq ft. and the rent would be $1200. That is about the minumum that you will find something near Balboa. My wife also worked at Balboa living in that condo.
If money is an issue then moving to California in general, and S.D. in particular, makes no sense.
Ours is currently in the process of being sold.
For purchase price of around 290k she can get a 1000 sqft condo in a nice neighborhood with good school.
Look at realtor.com..prices have come down.
Sorry to say, here in SD, anything under 1200/mo. will get you a nice little apt. in slum city unless you're very very lucky.
Is that for a 2 bedroom? But again, it's still over $1000. How many bedrooms was the place in Balboa?
This is such a hard question to answer. There is no question that San Diego is an expensive place to live. The bus service appears to be comprehensive and timely. The buses are well maintained and the routes are comprehensive.
I must assume that the naval Medical Center she is speaking of, is the one in Balboa Park. The areas around there can be dodgy but the Hillcrest area, Golden Hill, Kensington areas are well maintained with many long-term homeowners. I have no idea what the rentals are like in those areas, but they are not very far from the medical center.
Unfortunately, I know little or nothing about the schools in those areas.
I hope this is of some help.

Not an easy request, I'm afraid. San Diego is an expensive city. Any apartments she finds in that price range are not going to be in very nice neighborhoods.
A nice apartment under $1000 will be tough to find. I haven't lived in SD for a few years now but expect to pay $800-1200, maybe more.
Hope she finds something.
how about military housing?
Is there anyone (like someone in Human Resources) at the Naval Medical Center who could help her with relocation questions?
Doesn't look like much w/in your parameters.
Quite honestly, I live in Western PA, and could not find a 2 br apt for anywhere near $500 (in a safe community).
I think that a more realistic parameter would be $1200-1700/mo.
She should get a COLA since San Diego is a high-cost area. Tell her to check with her local housing office. We lived in the Poway area several years ago, which would be a longer commute but it's doable.
I concur but Kensington will be well out of her price range - try North Park, Normal Heights, University Heights area. Stay clear of City Heights (which those areas abridge). There are tons of rental properties in those areas, small 1000 sq ft houses & cottages + 30 unit apartment buildings, etc.. Also add the trolley to lists of available commuting options which could take her out as far east as La Mesa or south to Chula Vista (where things are much hotter temp wise but lots cheaper price wise)
