The democrat party was pretty conservative back in 1960 and earlier. Johnson's War on Poverty changed it forever.

The democrat party WAS liberal before 1960, or have you forgotten Presidents Wilson and Roosevelt (and the "Progressives") they were terrible (and liberal even back in the late 19th/early 20th century!

There is a large war brewing in the democratic party. It really isn't a party anymore. It has become two parties. I wonder how long before the Dean/Moveon wing makes it official and goes over to the Green party. Bottom line, no democrat can win the nomination without kowtowing to the far left wing of the party and no democrat who kowtows to that wing can hope to win a national election or very many local elections in any state that tends red.

But, we won't be hearing/reading any stories like that in the MSM because its the Republicans that are in their death throes, don't ya know.

It isn't even 2 parties. It's a loosely tied federation of special interests. The only common thread really binding them is their hatred of the right and of Bush.

Look at the pictures of the war rally this past weekend. I'd say less than half of the people there were to oppose the war. The rest were just trying to promote their own special interests by piggy backing it on to the war rally.

But what is "too" liberal? In fact what is liberal?
Today's political liberal is one who believes that personal freedom and liberty must be subordinated to the public good. A liberal is dedicated to the welfare state, and redistribution of the nation's wealth.

A liberal believes in equality to the point of absolute egalitarianism. A liberal believes that national sovereignty no longer has relevance; that private property and profits are not a good idea; that the U. S. has an obligation to police the world; to reduce its use of mineral resources; that America's wealth (not their own of course) should be distributed evenly over the globe; and that the good of the individual comes after the good of the state.

Above all, a liberal believes in a strong central government and in elite rule by their own group.

So can you be too liberal? Do governors believe things would be better if liberals believed less strongly than they do? Can a woman be a little bit pregnant?

It's easy to identify the core values of the modern Democrat Party: Murder, Treason and Socialism.

A liberal is a liberal is a liberal. Don't be fooled by these statements from Governor Freudenthal. Wyoming is currently drafting all kinds of legislation from the "Children and Families Initiative Study" commissioned by said governor. Essentially, this "study" is the vehicle for implementing socialism in Wyoming. This is basically the "bread and circus" the Democrats are offering the people of Wyoming in exchange for their vote and loyalty come the next election. Many people never saw the first five point purpose statement of this study, originally accepted by a forty member panel overseeing the study. It sounded like a five point plan coming out of Beijing. The five point purpose statement was later revised, but only after some Wyoming citizens objected to how it was worded. Governor Freudenthal is a liberal Democrat - he can distance himself from Dean, but he embraces and promotes the same philosophies.

Sounds like the Wyoming Democrats might have seen the light. The firearms issue is one we need to keep hammering. The Democrats on the national level are a bunch of gun-hating hoplophobes. We need to keep hammering at this issue and show them for what they are. We should also bust them every time they do a firearms photo op, like Frankenkerry did in the last election campaign.

Disagree - I believe the split is between religious social conservatives who want to regulate personal behavior and favor social spending so long as it fits their religious belief, and more libertarian (little l, not big l) small government conservatives who may or may not be religious but want to see government shrunk, period.

There are several factions in the GOP, but the GOP coalition will hold so long as the Dems have a fighting chance.

The problem is that everybody wants smaller government, except for their area or for their pet cause. That's why nothing gets done regarding reducing the size of government.
