Dispute over evolution goes on trial in U.S. court
Baltimore Sun ^ | September 26, 2005 | Arthur Hirsch

A Pennsylvania school district's use of "intelligent design" in its high school biology curriculum goes on trial in federal court today in the nation's first legal challenge to the idea, which contends that evolutionary theory alone does not explain how life on Earth took shape.

The lawsuit, brought by 11 parents in the Dover Area School District, attacks as unconstitutional the year-old policy of telling ninth-grade biology students that Charles Darwin's theory of evolution "is not a fact. Gaps in the Theory exist for which there is no evidence." School officials also recommend a book on intelligent design, or ID.

The plaintiffs, including the American Civil Liberties Union and Americans United for Separation of Church and State, argue that the policy -- which does not require students to study intelligent design -- serves religious, not secular ends, violating the First Amendment.

ID proponents say scientists can look at life forms and identify the work of a controlling "intelligence," although ID advocates are not specific about the nature of that force. While they do not reject all evolutionary theory, ID proponents argue that it incorrectly insists life took shape purely through a mindless process.

Typical. I, a Creationist, pose a yes-no question for which I receive numerous posts before an answer is provided . . . AND I'm called a "liar" for pointing this out.

Good job answering the question though.

It is interesting to know that we differ in more than our origins beliefs. You aren't bothered by an anti-American, anti-Christian group in your corner . . . I would be.

Oh yes - I know now that evolution is not true. God indeed is the creator of all.

That's right - those who believe in God are ignorant and those who believe in science are brillant. I think God is smarter to you.

You think that, but you have no proof. Science doesn't run on wishes, folk tales and fantasy.

Not my question. You "knew" that beofre you got older. I was asking if age has added to your wisdom. Most cultures think it does (especially Asian ones).

How is my question about someone's personal feelings, a "fallacy" and a "bogus question"?

Linking to a webpage explaining guilt-by-association is a non-sequitor.

Good grief, it isn't easy to get a simple answer on this is it? However, to his credit, Dimensio did finally give me a "no". Kudos to him/her.

No, I don't expect that. But since it was a yes-no question, shouldn't I at least get a "no" or a "yes" BEFORE the diatribe and accusations?

I have no problem with others having different views than me and all should feel free to express those views. This would be quite a bit more interesting and informative if we could keep the accusations to a minimum though.

Is there a way to retract my first post? I really don't enjoy angering my fellow Freepers. That wasn't the point of the question but so be it.

Maybe you - not me. In fact, that is just ridiculous but since I don't personally know you - maybe it isn't.

Personally, I cannot imagine too many other groups I would want on my side less.

Politics chooses sides, and association with someone makes you guilty of being in league with them in their views, true or not.

However, in reality, what is, is. Those that believe it, do. Those that do not, do not. It does not make it any less so. It does not matter the groupings of either camp.

Are you sure? Sorry - it's the scientist in me (put it in a jar and observe it).

No. The ACLU is usually wrong, and on this case they're right. As I said all along, a broken clock is right twice a day.

If your convictions may be tested by the fact that they're shared by someone that you usually disagree with, then your convictions aren't very strong to begin with.

Kindly stop hinting that because the ACLU agrees with us on this one, that our position is something to be ashamed of or reflects poorly on the science behind evolution. Neither is true.
