Dispute over evolution goes on trial in U.S. court
Baltimore Sun ^ | September 26, 2005 | Arthur Hirsch

A Pennsylvania school district's use of "intelligent design" in its high school biology curriculum goes on trial in federal court today in the nation's first legal challenge to the idea, which contends that evolutionary theory alone does not explain how life on Earth took shape.

The lawsuit, brought by 11 parents in the Dover Area School District, attacks as unconstitutional the year-old policy of telling ninth-grade biology students that Charles Darwin's theory of evolution "is not a fact. Gaps in the Theory exist for which there is no evidence." School officials also recommend a book on intelligent design, or ID.

The plaintiffs, including the American Civil Liberties Union and Americans United for Separation of Church and State, argue that the policy -- which does not require students to study intelligent design -- serves religious, not secular ends, violating the First Amendment.

ID proponents say scientists can look at life forms and identify the work of a controlling "intelligence," although ID advocates are not specific about the nature of that force. While they do not reject all evolutionary theory, ID proponents argue that it incorrectly insists life took shape purely through a mindless process.

Because some scientist names apes with humans doesn't make us apes or them human. Sorry. Use your God-given common sense!

Oscar Levant claimed to have known Doris Day before she was a virgin.

Humans are genetically closer to chimpanzees than chimpanzees are to gorillas. So from a genetic standpoint if chimpanzees are apes and gorillas are apes then humans must be apes too.

...there is always someone out there smarter than you (though you may find that hard to believe).

And even harder to find.

Would you accept 355/113? The first six odd numbers.

Here's a pretty picture. Don't you get it yet?

I don't know how much clearer we can be. It seems mlc9852 has completely rejected science. Which is fine, only it's ironic to be on the internet proclaiming as much.

Anyone can draw lines - that means nothing except what scientists dreamed up.

Rejecting evolution is only one facet of science, right? Why do you assume I reject "science" because I don't agree that humans descended from apes? Are you saying all of science is based on the theory of evolution?

You reject the methodology, the formulation of theories based on empirical evidence.

And when you prove humans descended from apes, I'll listen.

It's been proven. You ignore the evidence.

"Anyone can draw lines - that means nothing except what scientists dreamed up

However, scientists did not dream up the similarity in DNA, morphology and social structure. That was done by nature.

It's unfortunate that you cannot understand the lines drawn by scientists.

Codswallop.

You've been shown where to read about the evidence. Various posters have offered to clarify anything you had problems with.

You show no sign of ever having reviewed the information.

My interpretation is that you are weak in your faith and afraid that scientific information will damage it further.

If your faith were strong, you could freely learn the scientific material, say to yourself "How wonderful Creation is that is all hangs together so magnificently" and go on from there.

I agree they are a danger to civilization.

They are a danger to the US and to US science. Science will go on with these lunatics. Europe and Japan will carry the torch. The major risk IMO is they may torpedo the conservative movement in the US.
