LA governor asks for $32 billion for repairs

BATON ROUGE, Louisiana (Reuters) - The governor of Louisiana, whose state was slammed by two powerful hurricanes in less than a month, said on Sunday she was asking the federal government for $31.7 billion to help rebuild the state's infrastructure.

Gov. Kathleen Blanco said she would ask Congress for $11.5 billion to rebuild the state's damaged transportation system, including rebuilding spans of a key interstate highway, damaged ports and airports.

She said she would seek $20.2 billion to rebuild and protect the levee system surrounding New Orleans. Parts of that system breached during Hurricane Katrina and again during Hurricane Rita to flood parts of the low-lying city.

Rebuilding Louisiana will be a "massive undertaking," she said at a news conference following a meeting with U.S. President George W. Bush in Baton Rouge.

"This is not something a small state like Louisiana can do by itself," she said. "The challenge is so enormous that we cannot accomplish this rebirth without this president and without this Congress."

I wonder if this is on top of the $250 billion she asked for three days ago, and the $25 billion yesterday, for reuniting families back to LA?

Gimme, gimme, gimme...

I would only provide Blanco with Federal money on the condition that she resign immediately. Same goes for Mayor Noggin'.

The governor stated she really had no idea how much these projects would actually cost, but wanted to make sure she received enough federal funds to cover local graft and corruption.

Sounds perfectly reasonable.

NOPE; NOPE; NOPE.

NOT ONE THIN DIME she should get until ALL is accounted for.

What about all the monies that have been going to them for the repairs and upgrades on the levees, and they have used the monies to create gambling?

If they think gambling is SOOOOO important, then bring the people back in, water or not, and have gambling to pay the costs of all the repairs and damages.

Did you see where she asked the other day for the Government to pay for the police and firemen wages? Now, don't get me wrong, I don't think they should go unpaid, but couldn't they 'volenteer' some of their time right now?

How many fire and police departments do they have working down there, to help N.O. right now?

It just seems to me that its all give me, give me, give me, and nothing being done.

And I don't know if I want any of 'my' money going there or not, have WE, the PEOPLE been asked yet??????

If she asks for the money in small unmarked bills, don't give it to her.

Does New Orleans need to be replaced right where it was? Couldn't there be some stipulation placed on the monies that will eventually sent to LA? Do people really need to be living on land that depends on levees to keep out the water? Just wondering.

This idiot and her idiot mayor cohort should be forced to come up with a way to fund this themselves. 90% of their problems stemmed from poorly maintained levees, which was their responsibility.

These Democrat scum in Louisiana should not get one cent of federal taxpayer money unless it is tightly managed and controlled by either a "Federal Czar" appointed by GW Bush, or a "new" governor of Louisiana and Mayor of New Orleans. Governor Kathleen Blanco is incapable of finding her way to the bathroom, and Mayor Ray Nagin was left out of the picture when the brains were passed. However, even though these folks are the vermin of the Democrat Party, the real culprits are the voters of Louisiana that put these morons in office!!! Louisiana, you want an effective, long term, beneficial recovery and rebuilding, impeach Blanco, Nagin, Landrieu and Jefferson tomorrow morning!!!

In your dreams...she'll get it and nobody will follow up to see where it all goes. I don't get it. Millions of people work for the government and nobody's job is to follow up on whether or not the money has been used the way it was intended? Nobody bothered to make sure that the money sent for levee fixing was actually used for levee fixing? Can you imagine this in the real world???

And our GOP Congress will give it to them too.

And all this new spending will not be offset.

Count on it.
