A chance meeting at an Independence animal shelter has left a relocated Hurricane Katrina victim without his longtime pet.
John Wyrick, who moved to the area from Mississippi following the hurricane, had taken his German Shepherd to the shelter approximately two weeks ago after learning he would not be able to keep it at a temporary residence.
He released his pet of 14 years to a stranger while searching for a place to live. After finding a home, he has learned he can't have his dog back.
Wyrick met with an unidentified woman visiting the shelter, said Amy Wells, shelter manager.
"He wanted the animal shelter to take the dog. They started talking," Wells said. "He decided he wanted to give the dog to her. I told them you cannot do the transfer on our property."
After that point the story becomes unclear. What is known is Independence resident Lynn Nevills eventually ended up with the dog. Wyrick could not be reached Friday.
City of Independence spokesperson Irene Baltrusaitis said the shelter believes Nevills is not the woman who spoke with Wyrick because she differs in body type and description. Nevertheless, at some point Nevills took possession of the dog. After Wyrick found a permanent residence, he approached Nevills about recovering his pet of 14 years.
Nevills reportedly has refused to return the dog. Nevills was at her home Friday afternoon but would not respond to requests for comment. The sound of a dog could be heard outside of her north Independence home.
Residents throughout the area have offered Nevills money or puppies as an incentive to return the dog to Wyrick after seeing the story on television.
Nevills is not a shelter volunteer. She has volunteered with the Independence Police Department's K-9 unit, according to Baltrusaitis.
Nevills and her husband have done grass and landscape work, as well as raised money for the department's K-9 program.
"We don't have volunteers who take care of dogs," Baltrusaitis said." The volunteers take care of other things."

Thanks so much for your really very kind comments....certainly I was not a perfect mom, but loving animals as I did, I wished for my boys to know that loving relationship....often when I talk with my remaining son, many events, when recalled, are often punctuated with what animals we had then, and all the things that those animals did...and how they made our lives so full...
When my older boy first became ill, he was initially in t he hospital for 11 weeks....when he was finally well enough to bring home, all he could think about was his dog...he was worried that his dog would no longer recognize him, since he had been gone for so long...he worried for nothing...as soon as he came into the house, his dog, just screamed for joy, to see his pal again...
I too, always seemed to be followed by a pack of animals...we always laughed, whenever I went into the bathroom, I was followed by a trail of animals, who did not believe in letting me out of their sight...if I closed and locked the bathroom door, they would lay outside the door, and just whine and whimper...it was just easier to let them into the bathroom...doing my business, or taking bath, always seemed to be done in front of an audience of furry 4 legged friends...
But these memories, are what our lives are made up of...I am going to be 60 yrs old next month and the hubby is 62...we are both retired, and looking forward to getting into our Rv, and drive and tourist around and just have some grand adventures, before the son thinks we are demented, and lassos us back in...but being on the 'down' side of life now, those wonderful memories, of my boys and their pets, and my times with all of them, will warm my heart in my old age...

Yes...but he especially had a thing about -snakes-.
A 6 foot black snake once got in the house and started crawling up the stair well wall towards the bedroom.
Being the little prankster that I am, I yelled for the ex to get up a second and when he poked his head out of the bedroom door, he was eye-to-eye with the snake.
I've *never* heard a man scream like that!...LOL!
I was laughing so hard I could barely catch the snake and put it in a trash can to take back outside.
And to top it off, the ex went out the next morning and started messing with the trash can.
The snake was really miffed and you can guess what happened when the 2-legged idiot took the lid off the can.
I got to hear "the scream" all over again.
The ex figured he'd "get even" with the poor snake by dumping it into a river.
I didn't have the heart to tell him that snakes can swim just fine.
Lady, if *my* mom had been like you, I'd be lighting candles in front of her picture every night....:)
99% of the best memories I have include some critter or another.
I can tell you a million wonderful dog/horse/rat/rabbit/chicken/goose/cow/goat/sheep/possum/squirrel stories but not many great people tales.
After the thing with the uncle started, I pretty much kept to myself and my critters.
I'm probably a better person for it because I learned love, loyalty and forgiveness from all of them.
I learned most of all to be both *human* and *humane*...:)

Had a brief look at your 'doggie' pics...such regal looking hounds...I dont know much about Ibizan Hounds, but they are lovely...
You are so right, I think...when people grow up and live with animals, ones life has so many wonderful stories, that involve the animals..I too, have way tooo many animal stories...
I like what you say at the end of your post..that one can learn to be more human and more humane, due to the influence of the critters...
God bless all the critters, for He knew what he was doing, when He blessed us humans with them...

Was I talking past you, as if you weren't in the room? Perhaps like some famous dog trainer, speaking to other famous dog trainers about their wee lil' doggies on the leash besides them? Mean things about those wee lil' doggies they say, rude nicknames, and such. But the doggies don't hear.
And the famous dog trainers wouldn't care if they did.
Why? The only relationship loved by famous dog trainers is control. Not "taming" per se. A "tame" dog is not much a delight to them -- but an coweringly obedient one is.
