Katrina evacuee would like his dog back (Nevills REFUSES to return Shuma to owner of 14 years)

A chance meeting at an Independence animal shelter has left a relocated Hurricane Katrina victim without his longtime pet.

John Wyrick, who moved to the area from Mississippi following the hurricane, had taken his German Shepherd to the shelter approximately two weeks ago after learning he would not be able to keep it at a temporary residence.

He released his pet of 14 years to a stranger while searching for a place to live. After finding a home, he has learned he can't have his dog back.

Wyrick met with an unidentified woman visiting the shelter, said Amy Wells, shelter manager.

"He wanted the animal shelter to take the dog. They started talking," Wells said. "He decided he wanted to give the dog to her. I told them you cannot do the transfer on our property."

After that point the story becomes unclear. What is known is Independence resident Lynn Nevills eventually ended up with the dog. Wyrick could not be reached Friday.

City of Independence spokesperson Irene Baltrusaitis said the shelter believes Nevills is not the woman who spoke with Wyrick because she differs in body type and description. Nevertheless, at some point Nevills took possession of the dog. After Wyrick found a permanent residence, he approached Nevills about recovering his pet of 14 years.

Nevills reportedly has refused to return the dog. Nevills was at her home Friday afternoon but would not respond to requests for comment. The sound of a dog could be heard outside of her north Independence home.

Residents throughout the area have offered Nevills money or puppies as an incentive to return the dog to Wyrick after seeing the story on television.

Nevills is not a shelter volunteer. She has volunteered with the Independence Police Department's K-9 unit, according to Baltrusaitis.

Nevills and her husband have done grass and landscape work, as well as raised money for the department's K-9 program.

"We don't have volunteers who take care of dogs," Baltrusaitis said." The volunteers take care of other things."

At 14, doing this to the dog is going to be very detrimental to her health.
=======
Oh, I know. :-( That is what has been tearing my heart out.

We had to have our Scottish Terrier put to sleep when she was around that age, because of an inoperable tumor. When a dog has been with owners for that long, they are so bonded with the owners and they with the dog that it is just unconscionable to separate them...no, make that evil.

Where The Red Fern Grows" [and the sequel] were some of the first DVDs I ever bought. I watched them once and gave them to my dad with orders to -never- return them....:))

my friend recently read this book aloud to her children... when her husband came home from work he found all three children and his wife crying!

What a faithful puppy of Salamander's you are! Well trained. Does she ever call you a "skanky white trash coon dog"?

Nah. She never treats dogs as bad as she does humans. And you're more a puppy to her than a man. Be a man and she'll whack you. Be a woman, and she'll slander you. Be a human and she'll call you a twit, a skank, deserving of a whack. Be a dog and she'll rescue you, she'll love you.

Look, DS, some folks love dogs, and some folks "love" dogs because they hate (or are afraid of interacting with) fellow humans.

Well don't join the slanderers then. Love us fellow humans as much as you claim.

Face it, respect for fellow humans comes first.
About the sunday paper whacking -- I wasn't referring to you, it was a more general comment. Speaking to a type of dog-"lover".

Sent e-mails this a.m. to Sean Hannity-- and another to KCTV in Independence, MO.
Asked them to stay with the story. They know lots of people are paying attention, as they said as much on their website.

Oh, you've finally thought up something to say in return?

I suggest you knock off teh personal attacks NOW.

Look bvw, you said something to the effect of "How childish" yesterday, and THEN you proceeded to act twice as childish as anyone I have ever seen in forum act.

"Nevills is not the woman who spoke with Wyrick because she differs in body type and description."

You still also failed to notice the above text in the article.
You have a problem, I suggest you FIX it.

You complained.

I stated facts that you had problems with.
Learn how things work, or your stay will be short.
Have a nice day.

You started off with this: "What if they don't want one? I never did."
Well, you don't like dogs, so why are you in a dog thread?

"Because it's a free country."

SO?
Doesn't mean you wander into a dog thread and have a problem with it.
That's like wandering into a manicure salon and whining about the acetone odor.
"It's a free country" is not an excuse.

I told you:
If you don't like dogs, don't click on the thread.
Doesn't matter if this is a free country, this is a privately owned website.
And if the owner says someone goes or stays, they go or stay, comprende?
The defense statement of "It's a free country" doesn't apply here.

And it STILL is good advice, and you are STILL having a problem with it.

"Your statement is untrue. I did not complain."

If it were untrue, then why are you still in a dog thread when you have a problem with it?
If you don't like dogs, don't click on teh thread.
When peopel ask you why you're in teh thread at all, don't use the excuse of "because it's a free country".
I explained why that doesn't apply, your response was this brainiac answer:

"Unless you're Jim Rob, your response is meaningless. If he tells me not to click on the thread that's his right. Not yours."

Let me tell you, if you click on a thread, gripe about the thread, and then gripe about being smacked for griping, people will let you know ou are out of line.
Now you can either continue to whine about being asked why you are in a dog thread, and continue to use faulty reasoning for ignoring good advice, or you can not click on dog threads.

Nobody held a gun to your head to get you in this thread.
IF you make statements out there indicating that you really have no reason for being in a thread, people WILL tell you to leave the thread.
That is just the way it is.
That is the way it has ALWAYS worked.
Again, you can either take this advice, or you can continue to ignore it.
But ignoring it will cost you at some point.
And yes, you are whining about being told, "If you don't like dogs, don't click on dog threads."

Dunno.
I hunt trolls, and some have issues with that itself.
Heard a few morons about a month or two back whine about how we ban trolls instead of debating them.
