Katrina evacuee would like his dog back (Nevills REFUSES to return Shuma to owner of 14 years)
The Examiner ^ | September 24, 2005 | Andre Riley

A chance meeting at an Independence animal shelter has left a relocated Hurricane Katrina victim without his longtime pet.

John Wyrick, who moved to the area from Mississippi following the hurricane, had taken his German Shepherd to the shelter approximately two weeks ago after learning he would not be able to keep it at a temporary residence.

He released his pet of 14 years to a stranger while searching for a place to live. After finding a home, he has learned he can't have his dog back.

Wyrick met with an unidentified woman visiting the shelter, said Amy Wells, shelter manager.

"He wanted the animal shelter to take the dog. They started talking," Wells said. "He decided he wanted to give the dog to her. I told them you cannot do the transfer on our property."

After that point the story becomes unclear. What is known is Independence resident Lynn Nevills eventually ended up with the dog. Wyrick could not be reached Friday.

City of Independence spokesperson Irene Baltrusaitis said the shelter believes Nevills is not the woman who spoke with Wyrick because she differs in body type and description. Nevertheless, at some point Nevills took possession of the dog. After Wyrick found a permanent residence, he approached Nevills about recovering his pet of 14 years.

Nevills reportedly has refused to return the dog. Nevills was at her home Friday afternoon but would not respond to requests for comment. The sound of a dog could be heard outside of her north Independence home.

Residents throughout the area have offered Nevills money or puppies as an incentive to return the dog to Wyrick after seeing the story on television.

Nevills is not a shelter volunteer. She has volunteered with the Independence Police Department's K-9 unit, according to Baltrusaitis.

Nevills and her husband have done grass and landscape work, as well as raised money for the department's K-9 program.

"We don't have volunteers who take care of dogs," Baltrusaitis said." The volunteers take care of other things."

"Better the dog live than die."
Agreed.

Better that Ms. Nevill act like a caring human being too.

severely abused and beaten by a NO cop couple

No surprise there. Unfortunately, while 'the law' specifically protects them another, better, law should make them unable to sleep at nights for fear they'll be found.

I'm 44, as if it's any of -your- business.

I've never claimed to be "kind, sweet and caring" and I was not speaking to you unless you've changed your user name to DJ McWoW.

Now buzz off and go bother someone who cares what you think.

Part of me sincerely hopes they had a miserable time in NO last month.

[A very, VERY miserable time]

It'd be a small bit of justice, for starters.

Repressed anger is a killer.

You take it out on yourself instead of the obnoxious miscreant who's sorely in need of an @ss-kicking.

I used to hold it all in because I'm naturally overly polite and I didn't want to offend or appear to be "evil, mean & nasty".

Now I don't care and I feel *much* better....:)

Cute too. For a six year old trapped in a 44 body.

Can we talk about "caring human beings", then? Do we care more for dogs than humans? On this thread that has been a question.

Do you have a reading comprehension problem?
*DJ* referred to twits.
if you feel that she was speaking of you, then take your wounded pride issues up with *her*.

You obviously have a twit complex because you automatically assumed I was referring to you when in actuality, I was making a blanket statement on twits, in general.

I'ts not my problem if you see yourself in something I wrote.

[and an infantile ad hominem thrown in to boot...PKB...so typical]

Now seriously, dude...this cutie is politely suggesting that you summarily piss off.

We're done, whether you will it or no.

Thanks for relating your experience with your dog. I agree with your take on this. I do understand Mark's stand on legality, but can't agree that the dog should be presented with the possibility of dying with strangers while this is resolved.

And what Nevills is doing is neither mean nor awful. What is incendiary -- and by that awful -- is the public reaction. The victimology -- so fond of victimology has the media trained the public to be! So willing is the public, and Freepers too, to be so played like dogs in a puppy-factory kennel going wild with feral delight when the the media tosses raw meat to them.

DANCE! Says the media. Firing pistols like some bandit into the ground before crowd. And all the crowd dances. Except one. Nevills. She says no. "I don't dance."

SLAUGHTER HER! Says the media. And the crowd tears her to pieces. She is alone, a woman alone. Torn to pieces, ravaged, pulped, defamed. The crowd?

Dog lovers all.

I've not dealt with K-9 handlers. That's an interesting take. It almost sounds as if they are as convinced as some school teachers that they know way more than parents / owners).

You've got a great looking dog there.

OK... Let's give this Nevells woman a little breathing room. She is entitled to her point of view on this thing. She's just not articulate in expressing herself. Let someone who has the same perspective explain for her.....

Ask her PROCTOLOGIST !!!

IMO dogs respond to people who love them, care for them, and don't take any crap. Spend enough time at it and the rest is an academic matter of different approaches to different objectives. Those vary a lot more than most people reaize.

Dax is a BIG DS bitch for her age (75# at nine months). She is typically headstrong for a DS, as the trainers call it a "hard" dog. Very conniving, very smart, and just too adorable for her own good. There's a lot of feral in her. I spend about eight hours a day with her while I work, training her to be a helper on the land: carry stuff, watch for trouble from the right vantage point, chase things off without getting into a fight, etc. She's a good pup, and VERY nice to small children. Time will tell but I think she's worth breeding.

If you don't like dogs, don't click on the thread.
Doesn't matter if this is a free country, this is a privately owned website.
And if the owner says someone goes or stays, they go or stay, comprende?
The defense statement of "It's a free country" doesn't apply here.
