The officer who commanded the operation to rescue two SAS troopers in Basra refused last night to apologise for his actions and promised to do the same again if British soldiers' lives were in danger.
"The message this action has sent to terrorists around the world is that they cannot expect to take British soldiers hostage and get away with it," said Brig John Lorimer.
In an exclusive interview with The Sunday Telegraph, he added: "It would be inappropriate for the British Army to apologise."

"It would be inappropriate for the British Army to apologise."
Way to go!!!!
You don't mess with the Sheepdogs!
Those Iraqians ought to be uncommonly grateful for not having sustained much greater and well deserved losses. Well, there always is the next time...
This story reminds me of three fairly famous quotations:
1) When you have to kill a man it costs nothing to be polite. Sir Winston Churchill
2) May God have mercy upon my enemies, because I won't. Gen G Patton
3) I have never made but one prayer to God, a very short one: 'O Lord, make my enemies ridiculous.' And God granted it. Voltaire
Oh, yes, this is definitely a propaganda victory for the Home Side. And Well deserved. Good job lads!
May God have mercy upon my enemies, because I won't. Gen G Patton
LOL!
The US Press is spinning this as if the two Brits were taken into custody by the Iraqi police, and Brigadier Lorimer's men sprung them from a proper jail.
In point of fact, they were taken by an unlawful, Iranian-sponsored extremist Shia militia, on the Mahdi Army model, that has arrogated to itself the function of police in Basra.
If Muqty wants to be the Mahdi he ought to put himself in mind of what happened to the last character to declare himself Mahdi and kill a few Brits. Google "Omdurman" to read about the end of that Mahdi's empire.
