ROWAN COUNTY -- A group of Rowan County residents have organized armed patrols from the rooftops of their homes overnight Friday to protect themselves from a man suspected of arson and attempted murder.
Neighbors are upset deputies aren't on constant patrols or on a manhunt in search of David Lovett, a man accused of arson and attempted murder. If authorities can't catch him, they are ready to take up arms.
"We're not going to let this thing go by," said Richard Walker. "We're protecting our property and our homes."
According to police, Lovett created a "hit list" of residents he believed stole money, cigarettes and shaving cream from him.
"I don't know who is responsible for stealing my things, so I must punish all of you," the list reads. "Give it back and I will not punish you."
In an attempt to cross names off the list, Lovett has stabbed his aunt, Rita Regis, and burned several items in the homes of residents Scott Everhart and Amber Walker.
"He jumped out of his seat, grabbed the knives, stabbed her in the face and started stabbing her in the head," said Regis' boyfriend Douglass Altman.
Neighbors say four other residents were named in addition to the three that are already victims of Lovett's attacks. Lovett frequently threatened neighbors with a machete and a hatchet, neighbors said.
"He believes he's Sasquatch. He believes he's Bigfoot," neighbor Tom Lettice said. "He says, 'I'm around when you least expect me.'"
Police believe Lovett is hiding in the woods behind his neighborhood.
These people need to understand that the courts have consistently ruled that LEOs and LEAs are not liable for what happens to them and are not obligated to protect them in any way.
It's good these people are taking up their own defense...but it shouldn't have taken a lack of "constant patrols" to wake them up to the reality of why our Founding Fathers put the right to keep and bear arms second only to the right to freedom to worship and dissent!
Charming fellow . . .just charming.
I know some people in that neck of the woods. All of them own guns and all of them are good shots. Roof tops may sky line you but they offer good observation and fields of fire.
This guy shuld remember what happened to the neighborhood terrorist that was in "In Broad Daylight"--(name escapes me)
The citizens took action.
How can they demand protection? They should allow the inspection process to go on before any unilateral declaration of self-defense occurs. They ought to send in John Kerry to negotiate with Lovett because he may be able to get them a sweet deal where Lovett promises not to attack in exchange for a urine-for-food program, in which the residents put up money to feed him and, in return, he will urinate on them.
Say now, that sounds suspiciously like "The Great Society."
What planet did you say this is happening on.....???
Rowan County, NC. Centered on Salisbury. Mostly rolling small hills and rural. Lots of hunters and gun owners. The ones I know are all good shots.
this is a job for the local fire department.
set a nice long brushfire line at the windward edge of the woods...
LOL. People keep posting articles and most have no idea where the article is out of. Rowan county?? It could have been in Canada for all I know.
Ken McElroy of Skidmore, Missouri
Thanks! I remember reading the book and the idea of someone like him in the neighborhoos frightened me to death.
Gee, I guess the Charlotte NC link does not give it away.
5 seconds on Google and here it is.
http://www.co.rowan.nc.us/ NORTH CAROLINA
Gee, the link or location of where the story was reported out of is many times meaningless, and isn't necessarily where the event occurred. Many times you'll see an article being put out of Los Angeles or NY, and the story was not anywhere near those towns, that is why the first paragraph or the title header will usually cover the location, city, state etc. I just read a story two days ago that was linked to the Los Angeles Times, but the story was out of Utah.
Also you'll note the Header leading the article says ROWAN COUNTY in caps, when it should have read: ROWAN COUNTY N.C.
Again, the link to where the story was written does not necessarily mean that is where the story or event occurred.
Uppity peasants!
Arrest all of them, take away their pitchforks & torches, so this poor, misunderstood mentally ill person can seek the catharsis he needs to cure himself without resorting to poisonous medication. So what if they lose a bit of property &/or flesh; it's not this poor insaned
victim's fault that he CAN'T BE LOCKED IN A LOONEY BIN AGAINST HIS WILL, WHERE HE HAS BELONGED FOR QUITE SOME TIME.
Looks like you could figure it out two days ago. Guess you got dumber last night.
