WHITE HOUSE, Tenn. -- Play ball! As long as it's not Sunday morning.
Alderman Darrel Leftwich is proposing that the city establish new Sunday hours for White House Municipal Park so sporting events could only be held in the afternoon.
"I am concerned that we are not sending the right message to the community by having tournaments and league play during worship hours," Leftwich said.
Leftwich said that he drove by the park Sunday morning on his way to services at Temple Baptist Church and saw that it was full of people at a soccer tournament.
"God our Father intended the seventh day to be one of rest and worship," Leftwich said during this week's city board meeting. He asked the city manager to draft an ordinance that would restrict Sunday hours at parks in the town, about 20 miles north of Nashville.
Alderman Farris Bibb Jr. said the city should go slow before enacting a change. "With all due respect to Alderman Leftwich, the seventh day of the week is Saturday," Bibb said.
My rabbi says no sports on Saturday...what to do?
Play Golf?
Alderman Leftwich is a demagogue. If he wants more people in church, he should do a better job of acting like a Christian.
Maybe the first step would be to butt out of everybody else's business.
Of course, Alderman Leftwich is right.
And I'm sure some Imam will insist there should be no sports at all. What to do indeed...
Soccer yes. Taliban No.
...as long as the rabbi doesn't ride in the cart.
LOL what a nut.
*ding*ding*ding* We have a winner.
That'll go over like - dare I say it? - a fart in church.
ANY community can pass whatever law they wish with NO intereference from the federal govt.
If a community wants to ban sports on Sundays, then they can do so as long as they follow their own laws to pass the legislation.
Only socialists and worse would disagree.
>"God our Father intended the seventh day to be one of rest and worship," Leftwich said...
Uh, wouldn't that be SATURDAY?
Mighty embarassing for a city official (Leftwich) to not know what day of the week he worships.
So9
"Only socialists and worse would disagree."
Hmm...no.
Local communites can't pass laws removing the 5th amendment right against self incrimination. They can't (but have been allowed to) infringe on the 2nd amendment.
The bill of rights enumerate rights which government can not take away, whether liberals or conservatives want it to be or not.
Oh really? So if a community passes a law allowing for slavery and segregation, the Federal government should butt out, hm?
I seem to recall a certain civil war going down about 150 years ago over such issues. Last I saw, the side that claimed ultimate authority of State's Rights over Federal Rights...well...lost.
And I suppose NOBODY here ever heard of an election where the people who live there could decide for themselves what they want?
What if the PEOPLE speak and say NO to sports on Sundays? Are you going to demand that they must allow it?
