Hurricane Rita Live Thread, Part VI
NHC - NOAA ^ | 23 September 2005 | NHC - NOAA

Posted on 09/23/2005 9:39:06 AM PDT by NautiNurse

Dangerous Hurricane Rita is expected to make landfall in the northeast Gulf of Mexico within 24 hours. Tornados have spawned in Louisiana. Water is filling the Ninth Ward of New Orleans again. A bus carrying elderly evacuees was gutted by fire this morning outside Dallas, with multiple fatalities. Television crews have positioned their hurricane reporters throughout the region to attain maximum drama effects. Whoooooa.

I bet Geraldo shows up side by side with Shep and uses the same dog from the last storm (Dusty) as a prop.

The crickets were chirping, then they stopped, but they're back. We haven't seen a thing yet. It's breezy, that's all.

I think its going to come in just east of port arthur - they will avoid the storm surge from the sea (but will get backside flodding from the bay) if the forecast holds.

Same thing happened to me with my Dobie.

Shep just asked the weather guy about were he is standing. The guy said you are going to be under water.

He wasn't just a weather guy. He is the director of the National Hurricane Center, Max Mayfield.

I hope Shep caught on that perhaps he might want to get to higher ground. I'm not sure if he realized that hurricanes don't discriminate. They target journalists as well.

"The guy said you are going to be under water."

"Please be true."

Well, perhaps we need to FedEx him a bottle of bubbly!

I'm not sure whether it's worse to have 110mph winds for a couple of hours or 70 mph winds for 6, 8 or 10 hours.

I live about 20 miles southwest of Jersey Village now. I'm expecting 60 mph winds, with bigger gusts for at least 6 hours. It probably will be a little longer and a little stronger, although if this storm keeps moving east, that will improve. Right now, it's 20-30 mph winds. It won't be long before they double.

We'll worry about the rainfall Sunday or later. Tonight's plan is to survive the winds and maybe, just maybe, keep the power on.
