Slain girl's mother says pressure led to fiance's injuries

CHARLES CITY (AP) — Evelyn Miller’s mother said her fiance cut his wrist with a knife out of frustration with the pressure from law enforcement officers and their failure to find her daughter’s killer.

“When he is hurting, he hurts himself,” Noel Miller said Thursday.

Her fiance, Casey Frederiksen, cut his wrist on Wednesday. He had been reading a newspaper article in which Evelyn’s father, Andy Christie of Waterloo, had been critical of her and Frederiksen’s parenting, just before he cut his wrist, Miller said.

Miller said it took six stitches to close the cut. Frederiksen is recovering in a Mason City hospital and should be released by Monday, she said.

Five-year-old Evelyn Miller disappeared July 1 from the apartment in Floyd where she lived with her mother, Frederiksen and two young brothers.

Her body was found six days later in the Cedar River, about two miles from her home. Her death has been ruled a homicide, but details about how and when she was killed have not been released. No arrests have been made.

Miller and Frederiksen moved to a house in Charles City after Evelyn’s funeral. Miller said her neighbors have treated her and Frederiksen with suspicion and hostility.

“They stand outside and watch us all the time,” she said.

Lance Miemi, 25, said he heard screaming and bickering at the Miller and Frederiksen home about 7 p.m. Wednesday. After police and medics arrived, Miemi said he saw a police officer throw a knife into the front yard. Then, he said, he saw Frederiksen run out the back door.

“Two cops took him down and handcuffed him,” he said.

Frederiksen, with a bandage on his wrist, then was put on a stretcher and taken to a hospital, Miemi said.

Fiance of Evelyn Miller's mother ordered to hospital

The fiance of Evelyn Miller's mother has apparently been court-ordered to receive further care after cutting his wrists Wednesday night.

Casey Frederiksen was seen waiting outside a squad car in the ambulance bay at Floyd County Memorial Wednesday with two Floyd County sheriff's deputies at about 9:30 p.m. A sheriff's office document shows that at 9:28 p.m. two deputies transported a male mental subject from the hospital to the behavioral services unit at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa, in Mason City.

According to the hospital's Web site, the unit offers psychological evaluations, psychotherapy and psychiatric care, among other services.

The report states the male subject was transported on an order from a magistrate judge.

Frederiksen, lying on his stomach and with his bandaged wrists restrained behind his back, was carried from his back yard on a stretcher and placed in an ambulance about 7 p.m. on Wednesday.

Police and ambulance personnel were dispatched at 6:22 p.m. following a report that a male had cut his wrists at the 902B E St. residence that Frederiksen shares with Noel Miller, Evelyn's mother.

Neighbors reported hearing yelling and screaming coming from the house just before police and paramedics arrived Wednesday.

A woman visiting neighbors at the time of Wednesday's incident said Frederiksen ran out the back door about 10 minutes after police entered.

Several neighbors also reported seeing a bloody knife thrown from the front door onto the lawn after police entered the house.

Charles City Police Chief Mike Wendel said Thursday that no charges have been filed as a result of the incident.

Miller left the residence a short time after the ambulance departed with Frederiksen, witnesses said.

Last week, Miller and Frederiksen told KCRG-TV they feel they've been unfairly targeted by investigators and judged by the community. The day before, investigators searched the couple's former apartment complex in Floyd.

Evelyn's father, Andy Christie, of Waterloo, told KCRG-TV Wednesday night that he hasn't spoken with Noel Miller since his daughter's memorial service.

Christie and his wife, Lindsey, said they contacted the Iowa Department of Human Services after Evelyn said some unusual things but, ''DHS never believed anything we said.''
