I think my theory on this holds true.
By Rummy saying he would not permit open testimony the press jumped all over the story, asking questions. It now guarantees the media will cover it.

As I've said, even if the Administration would not allow them to testify, a subpoena would force it. Think some agreements were reached on what could be said. Sounds like Specter did "get to the bottom" of the silence by DOD.
Good News and on to the Hearings, Part II

That was my theory as well. Also, the hearings last week were overshadowed by the hurricane coverage. Hopefully, the new hearings will be held during a clear news cycle.

Excellent observation of Bush strategery.

Do we have confirmed knowledge it was Rummy or is that just rumor?
Tony Snow was talking yesterday that it was only rumor but he was going to attempt to confirm it. His show hasn't aired here yet today.

More likely that the DOD Brass was trying to keep this testimony from going public because it exposed the implementation of an "illegal" data mining operation. Rummy went along with the request at first, but GW intervened when it started to smell like a coverup (which could be blown up by the MSM). The Left has lately shown little regard for protecting its flanks when going after Bush.
