Detective wants to ask Vang about Clark County shooting

A Minnesota man convicted of killing six deer hunters in northern Wisconsin's Sawyer County last fall is considered a "person of interest'' in the investigation into an unsolved slaying of a hunter in Clark County four years ago, a detective says.

Detective Kerry Kirn of the Clark County Sheriff's Department said Thursday that he plans to ask Chai Soua Vang where he was on Nov. 23, 2001, when Jim Southworth was shot twice in the back near his tree stand on family land east of Neillsville in central Wisconsin.

A jury in Circuit Court in Hayward found Vang, 36, of St. Paul, Minn., guilty last Friday on six counts of first-degree intentional homicide and three counts of attempted homicide.

I dont suppose there was any forensic evidence to tie the two together. Like bullets that might have been recovered from the earlier shooting and how it might connect to the shooting this past November

No death penalty available in this case? Too bad. Maybe time to reconsider?

Nothing that they've been willing to talk about, yet.

I hope Vang gets nailed on this one . if he's the perpetrator.

Certainly did prove the Beltway snipers were responsible for other crimes across the country in Seattle, so perhaps there is reason to believe this animal is responsible for another similar crime.

I knew that this story would resurface once there was a conviction in Sawyer County. Maybe they'll give him something in return for a confession in the cold case.

Yikes. What's next with this creep? Sure sounds like his M.O.

God Bless and Keep all of his victims and their families, no matter where else they may be found. :(

I don't recall hearing about any forensic evidence but I vaguely recall something about a pick-up truck similar to one Vang owns or used to own being seen along with the 3 asian men in the earlier shooting.

Does anyone else remember something along those lines?

From today's article:

Among similarities in the cases, he noted that some of the Sawyer County victims were shot in the back, as was Southworth.

Also, Southworth appeared to have gotten out of his tree stand at the time he was shot, possibly to confront a trespasser, he said.

"We know something drew him out of his tree stand that day,'' Kirn said.

He said three men with Asian features were reported to have been seen on a dead-end road near the Southworth property on the day of the shooting.

Looking into any possible connection with Vang isn't the only focus of the investigation into the Southworth case, Kirn said.

"There's over 30 leads right now, and we don't know which one will lead to a successful conclusion,'' he said.

------------------------

Then there's the obvious. The guy gave testimony at trial that made many people, myself included, think he's killed before.

I had the same thought but it turns out that during the previous shooting the bullets passed completely through the victim and were not recovered. Too bad, it does suggest that the perp in that case was using "full metal jacket" ammunition. That would be typical of the case load lots of military ammo sold mail order. Hunting ammo most likely would have had a soft nose or hollow point or perhaps a "frangible" projectile. That is because hunting ammo is designed to transfer the maximum kinetic energy to the target. To do that the projectile must decelerate and stop inside the target, leaving the bullet or its fragments inside. Military ammo, OTOH, is designed to drill a neat little hole thru the target. The theory being that a wounded solider takes two men out of combat to carry him to an aid station, whereas a dead solider can stay where he is untill the fighting is over.

Yes, I recall the pickup was described as white and smaller, possibly a Japanese model. The truck was seen leaving the vicinity of the shooting, at the approximate time of the crime, and it was occupied by three men of Asian appearance.

I not only hunt but I also reload. From practical experience, I have recovered few bullets, even from with soft point ammo. unless one hits larger bones, the chance of containing the bullet is slim to none unless your using light deer calibers like .243 winchester. I was thinking that, especially if the second set of murders were done from a tree stand, that the bullets that passed through the victims would have been retrievable with metal detectors in the ground. Now the biggest problem would be with the first murder. If they found the victim was shot from a tree stand angle, they might be able to search the ground and perhaps find the bullet. If the gun was fired from level ground at the victim and it is in an open area most bets are off. If it was in dense timber, there still was the chance of locating a bullet in a tree.

Lots of "Would haves", and depending upon the eagerness of the local constabulary to perform a thorough search, probably a moot point. Still, there are possibilities however slim.
