U.N.: Babies die in IDF checkpoints

According to a U.N. report, pregnant Palestinian women encountering delays in IDF checkpoints run a high risk of medical complications, death to newborns

Reuters

Sixty-one women have given birth at Israeli checkpoints since 2000 due to delays in getting through the checkpoints, and 36 of their babies died as a result, the United Nations said on Thursday.

The incidents took place between September 2000 and December 2004, the World Health Organization said, relying on statistics from the Palestinian Ministry of Health.

Delays in checkpoints

Palestinian women continue to encounter risky delays in 2005, the U.N. Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees said in the U.N. Report, prepared for the U.N. General Assembly by the Geneva-based U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights.

Fifteen pregnant women in 2004 and eight in 2005 were delayed at checkpoints in the Gaza Strip for one to two and a half hours while being transported to a hospital by a Palestinian Red Crescent Society ambulance, the U.N. Palestinian aid agency UNRWA said.

Of the eight blocked this year, one gave birth in the ambulance while a second, suffering from problems in her six-month pregnancy, aborted in the ambulance, UNRWA said.

'Risky roadside births'

Palestinians' access to medical facilities has been "Significantly impaired" Due to Israeli security procedures at checkpoints and its construction of a barrier in the West Bank aimed at preventing terrorists from infiltrating into Israel, the U.N. Population Fund UNFPA said.

Since 2001, UNFPA said it recorded more than 70 cases of women in labor who were delayed at checkpoints, resulting in "Unattended and risky roadside births, causing maternal as well as newborn deaths," The agency said.

In some cases, pregnant women had to change from one ambulance to another on the other side of a checkpoint when Israeli security forces would not let the ambulance through, the office of the U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights said.

Increase in home deliveries

A growing number of Palestinian women have responded by having Caesarean deliveries or giving birth at home rather than try to travel to a medical facility, increasing the risk of complications and maternal or infant death, UNFPA and Palestinian health authorities said.

There were 8 percent more home deliveries in the West Bank and 0.5 percent more in Gaza this year, according to statistics from the Palestinian Ministry of Health.

Israel and the Palestinian Authority were asked to provide information for the report but did not respond, the report said.

How do we know they're even pregnant? Palestinian women have been know to use this as a way to disguise a bomb. Just recently some Palestinian woman was on her way to an Israeli hospital strapped up with a bomb to blow her caregivers to kingdom come. What kind of sick excuses for human beings cry out for genocide against the Jewish people, then seek treatment in Jewish hospitals?

Pure bull sh*t, but even if it was true, the Palestineans have only themselves to blame. It would not suprise anyone if a Palestinean woman should stuff her womb full of explosives in order to kill a few Jews.

IF this is true, I can't see what the problem is. They're going to blow them up about age 10 anyway.

On second thought, I can see their perdicament...a loss of future suicide bombers.

Would they like to have their babies live or would they like to use ambulances as weapons carriers? It's one or the other.

.......and how come babies always die if they can't get to an Israeli hospital?

The average Palestinian woman has 5.9 children so this rash of checkpoint babies is not implausibile.

I can't believe those numbers. Otherwise most of us wouldn't be here today since our ancestors would have died at checkpoints.

That's the correct question! After all the billions that have flowed into the Palistinian areas "why don't they have fully functioning hospital of their own"! They should have and no one is asking the question because we all know the answer.

[sarcasm]Yeah, it's probably the soldiers killing the babies so that they can eat them. It's all in the Protocols of Zion, ya know.... [/sarcasm]

Hey, I feel sorry for them and all that, but its kinda something they brought upon themselves.

Perhaps they should go to an Arab hospital instead of fleeing their country for medical support in Israel.

I am sure all the fine hospitals that were built with the Billions of American Tax dollars given in emergency aid for decades.

Hmmmm, Seems to me that Palestine is the only 50 year long running emergency in my recollection...

I wonder if the Palestinians have anything to gain from having their babies born in Jerusalem or other Israeli territory, other than obvious better health care? The U.S. has the problem that pregnant women cross the southern border to give birth to an anchor citizen baby. Do Palestinians get to claim a "right of return" if their child is born in Israel? Just wondering.

Are you referring to the footage from the Pierre Rehov movie that shows a Palestinian couple being coached by a newsteam to say the woman gave birth in a car with only her husband in attendance, oh the trauma (stage direction, backhand to the forehead, near swoon as the memory overcomes them)! The doctor was in on the farce as well.

In reality as the couple admitted ON CAMERA, she had given birth safely in the hospital.

Rehov was able to get great footage because he is French and was assumed to be a sympathizer. That fact speaks for itself. Remember who filmed Mohammed Dura?

Well according to demographics based on population growth rates by sectors, the average woman in Gaza has over 180 babies. Perhaps why there are such lines at checkpoints, it is all the thousands of taxi's everyday trying to get to Jewish hospitals.

Where is the f&*&&^%ng UN report on how many Palestinian babies died from poverty due to the billions$ that Arafat got and never used as intended for Palestinian economic development? Shouldn't the UN be helping those mothers sue Arafat's rich widow in their "International Court of Justice"?

The lack of morality and abject hypocrisy of the UN is appalling.
