Real Men of Genius
by Salena Zito
Bob Winter is one guy who gets it. This low-key copywriter is the genius behind those rather addictive Real Men of Genius Bud Light ads. Winter found a simple way to tap into Americas admiration for the slightly misguided hero we love to root for.
As we listen or watch the everyman that takes on the world with his odd jobs or ridiculous inventions, we find a way to smile and nod in admiration. We silently salute this offbeat champion. By the end of the commercial, when the schmaltzy music begins to swell, we almost expect him to reveal his cape and fight for Truth, Justice and the American Way. Whether he is Mr. Gasoline Barbeque Grill Starter or Mr. Centerfold Retoucher he is an extension of who we are.
Americans love their off-beat heroes, and we get slurpy over a good old-fashioned comeback as well. Nothing touches our souls or taps into our psyche better than those two components morphed into one mans character.
And we Americans are not one-dimensional by any stretch of the imagination. Our fascination with quixotic-like heroes applies beyond the realm of commercial exploitation. We constantly look for them in our leaders. Find a man or woman that is a little outside the box, has a swagger and a compelling comeback story and we are collectively smitten. You dont have to look further than George W. Bush, Jesse Ventura or Arnold Schwarzenegger to prove that point.

When I saw that, I sure as hell didn't "smile and nod in admiration," I laughed and I pointed.
Should I post a collection of links that I've found where someone could download ALL of the afforementioned commercials? It'd be for educational purposes only, of course. Maybe someone hasn't heard all of the 40+ commercials in the series.
my favorite is "Mr Used Car Lot Auto Salesman"- "You stand behind every car you sell, because if you stood in front of them, and the brakes went out, you'd be crushed."
Mr. Bowling Shoe Hander-Outer was the funniest one....
