CHARLES CITY, IA - The fiance of Evelyn Miller's mother was taken to a hospital after he apparently cut his wrists, the Charles City Press reported Thursday.
Casey Frederiksen, lying on his stomach and with his bandaged wrists restrained behind his back, was carried from his back yard on a stretcher and placed in an ambulance about 7:15 p.m. Wednesday, the newspaper said.
Five-year-old Evelyn Miller disappeared July 1 from the apartment in Floyd where she lived with her mother, Noel Miller, Frederiksen and two young brothers.
Her body was found six days later in the Cedar River, about two miles from her home. Her death has been ruled a homicide, but details about how and when she was killed have not been released. No arrests have been made.
Miller and Frederiksen moved to a house in Charles City after Evelyn's funeral.
Charles City Police Chief Mike Wendell declined Thursday to name the injured person, to describe the nature of the ambulance call, or whether it was a suicide attempt. He cited several reasons for not commenting, including federal privacy laws.
"The other is it appears to be the same people involved in a major investigation," Wendell said.
He did confirm the address as a rental home Frederiksen shares with Noel Miller.
According to the newspaper, neighbors reported hearing yelling and screaming coming from the house just before police and paramedics arrived.
A woman visiting neighbors at the time of Wednesday's incident said Frederiksen ran out the back door about 10 minutes after police entered, the newspaper reported.
According to the newspaper, several neighbors also reported seeing a bloody knife thrown from the front door onto the lawn after police entered the house.
Miller left a short time after the ambulance left with Frederiksen, witnesses said.
Frederiksen was transported in a squad car from Floyd County Memorial Hospital later in the evening by two Floyd County sheriff's deputies, the newspaper said.
Wendell, the police chief, said he did not have any details on where the individual was taken.
The Floyd County attorney's office said County Attorney Marilyn Dettmer was out of the office Thursday and no one else in the office was available to answer questions.
Floyd County Sheriff Rick Lynch also was also out of the office, the sheriff's office said.
Last week, Miller and Frederiksen told KCRG-TV they feel they've been unfairly targeted by investigators and judged by the community. The day before, investigators searched the couple's former apartment complex in Floyd.
Evelyn's father, Andy Christie, of Waterloo, told KCRG-TV Wednesday night that he hasn't spoken with Noel Miller since his daughter's memorial service.
Christie and his wife, Lindsey, said they contacted the Iowa Department of Human Services after Evelyn said some unusual things but "DHS never believed anything we said."
People have no concept how far the deck is tilted to the police. He can be an innocent person whom the police were squeezing.
A mere suspect is screwed for life. Remember richard jewel?
He may very well be guilty, but if he is innocent and is just responding to police "person of interest" pressure then I hope he turns around and finds a good lawyer to sue the police.
People forget that police solve cases DESPITE their "inteligence level" not because of it.
Some of us cannot forget something we never knew.
Regardless, I like how you misspelled "intelligence." ;O)
he either knows what happened since he's the only "alledged" parent home with her when she diappeared and was killed OR he did it.
I also wonder if the mother is in on a cover up, if her alibi is tight for the time frame the child was murdered.
I can't wait to find out what was on their hard drive that freaked the "MOM" out - after your child is murdered, why would anything freak you out after that?
How much do you know about the "story" they told and the night the 5 yr old disappeared under Fredricksen's watch?
It's always the mother's boyfriend it seems who kills the kid that wasn't his.
It's sickening, and the innocent children suffer.
Looks like the mom's boyfriend has some problems ping!
According to an earlier story, the hard drive contained four-years' worth of the family's digital pictures. So, maybe because of their previous experiences with the DHS and law enforcement, they hid the hard drive to keep it safe. Maybe they worried that, if the police get possession of it, that could very well be the last they'll ever see of the undamaged hard drive and/or the precious photographs it contains.
That's pretty much the only innocent explanation I can come up with. Of course, thinking of not-so-innocent explanations is a lot easier.
This makes no sense to me because if all her pictures of her precious child were on a "hard drive" you would think she would down load them on to a disc, print them etc.
That would be an innocent person's instinct.
Something's really not right about these people - from the obvious to what we dont' know.
Even assuming they had the CD burner and CDs, four years' worth could potentially take a long time to burn to disc.
print them etc.
That would take even more time, and I'd bet any prints they would get from their own printer would be well short of keepsake quality.
Time is in very short supply when a murder investigation is cranking up.
Again, it's the only good excuse I can come up with for their being 'freaked-out' about the cops conficating their hard drive. I have no idea whether it's the actual reason.
Perhaps not physically, but what about emotionally, developmentally, and morally?
I would say that's the result of the situation (which is ultimately the mother's responsibility) rather than anything the man does.
I too am puzzled as to why they would hide the hard-drive. I am however much more puzzled by the total lack of suspects!! Casey has returned home without being charged with anything, again being able to skip town whenever the mood may hit. Randy Patrie has also resumed life, going to work each day etc. The lack of information on this issue is scarey!!!
Cohabitation greatly increases the risk of child abuse, whether the biological parents are cohabiting or the mother is cohabiting with a boyfriend. Both conditions rank very high on the risk scale, but the environment in which a child lives with the mother's cohabiting boyfriend is by far the worst.
The study Broken Homes and Battered Children by Robert Whelan [Family Education Trust, 1993] found that the incidence of child abuse is 20 times higher for children living with their cohabiting parents and 33 times higher among children living with their mother and her boyfriend compared to children living with their biological, married parents. Similar risks apply in cases of fatal child abuse. The overwhelming number of child deaths occurred in households in which the child's biological mother was cohabiting with someone who was unrelated to the child.
The study, The Child Abuse Crisis: The Disintegration of Marriage, Family and the American Community, [Heritage Foundation, 1997] restates the risk of child abuse being 20 times higher than in traditional married families if parents are cohabiting (as in "common law" marriages) and 33 times higher if the single mother is cohabiting with a boyfriend. This research suggests that cohabitation is a much greater risk factor for domestic violence than marriage because relationship ties tend to be weaker within cohabitation compared with marriage.
Thanks for the info. It's appreciated.
You can say that again. These kinds of incidents ALMOST ALWAYS involve a live-in boyfriend. RARELY will you see this with a MARRIED mom and dad.
As usual, "fiance" = pervert pedophile shacking up with dumb white chick on welfare.
That's awful. Did he ever go to jail?
