ANSAR AL-SUNNA LEADER ARRESTED

One of the leaders of the terror organisation, the Ansar al-Sunna Army, was recently arrested in an area south of Baghdad, an Iraqi newspaper has reported. Ahmad Khadir Shahd al-Ghariri, an Ansar al-Sunna leader operating in the Larifaya district, the so-called 'triangle of death", was picked up by Iraqi security forces, the al-Mada neswpaper said.

Police chief Muhammad Abu Kahila was cited by the newspaper as saying that the militant leader had cut the throats of at least 15 people and carried out attacks on Iraqi police patrols and American troops. He was the head of a group of 15 militants and is thought to have been captured inside a hotel in the city of Samawa, south of the capital.

Ansar al-Sunna, or Army of the Protectors of the Sunna [which refers to the collective teachings of the Prophet Muhammad], is a Sunni extremist group said to be linked to al-Qaeda and Jordanian militant Abu Musab al-Zarqawi. It has claimed responsibility for a number of deadly attacks and kidnappings in Iraq.

In another operation, police also arrested four criminals responsible for the kidnapping and sexual assault of young women in the area south of Baghdad. The four have admitted to kidnapping and raping four female students who were on their way to university, demanding a ransom of 25,000 dollars for each girl.

52 insurgents arrested in various regions of Iraq -- Iraqi Defense Ministry

Iraqi authorities arrested Tuesday 52 insurgents in various parts of the country and detained manager of oil-products in Peji, said the Iraqi Defense Ministry.

A statement issued by the ministry said that five insurgents were detained in Salahuddin governorate, and a dozen others were arrested in Addajeel area for being suspects of carrying out bomb explosions that killed several citizens in a gas-station in the area.

In the governorate of Anbar, Iraqi authorities discovered an arms-stock in Fallujah and arrested three insurgents.

The statement said that the Iraqi army also detained six insurgents in Aziziah of Waset province for attacking civilians.

The army also detained 10 suspects of being involved in bombing two booby trapped cars that targeted a checkpoint in Latifiah, of southern Baghdad, and killed two army members.

In the meantime, a source of the joint coordination center in Salahuddin province said that the army stormed Peji refinery and arrested its manager of oil-products Ibraheem Mutlaq, without announcing that motives behind the detention.

The same source said that a couple of unidentified dead bodies were found on the Tigris.

Interpol hunts al-Qaeda suspects

INTERPOL would start issuing a new type of international alert notice to help police intercept people with alleged terrorist links who appear on a United Nations sanctions list, a top official said overnight. Ulrich Kersten, the world police body's special representative at the United Nations, said the new alert would make it easier to detect suspects, for example when trying to cross international borders.

He said it would not automatically oblige authorities to arrest a listed person, but it could prompt them to refuse entry to a country and seize weapons or cash. "If a (listed) person is found to have $US20,000 in their luggage, checks can then be made to see if this can be seized on the basis of court orders," he said.

A total of 328 individuals and 119 entities are currently named on the UN sanctions list as participating in financing, planning, facilitating or carrying out activities linked to al-Qaeda or the Afghan Taliban. Under a UN resolution passed in July, countries are now obliged to provide detailed information on suspects to Interpol when they submit names to be added to the list.

Interpol had raised concerns in the past that it was hampered in its investigations because it was not receiving this data. The 184-nation police body has its own database of about 8000 terrorist suspects, including details such as passport numbers, credit card details and phone numbers.

UN official Guillermo Kendall said more than $US90 million worth of assets had so far been seized from individuals appearing on the UN sanctions list.

(Nice in theory but terrorists don't carry money across borders any longer, they simply transfer money via Paypal)

Hizb module busted with arrest of four cadres

THE police today claimed to have busted a module of Hizbul Mujahideen militant outfit by arresting its four cadres. The arrests, police say, has helped it to solve many cases in the Budam district. “We have busted a Hizb module,” said Afad-ul-Mujtaba, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Budgam, adding, “And arrested its four members and solved six cases of killings and grenade attacks.”

The district police, Budgam, today apprehended four suspected militants involved in the killings of political activists and civilians in the Beerwah tehsil of the district. The four militants belong to the Hizbul Mujahideen (HM). Briefing the media about the arrests, Budgam SSP said a party of the district police arrested Mohammad Yousuf Dar of Kawoosa, Beerwah. He (Dar) was involved in many killings, said Mujtaba, adding, “He was specially trained for shooting people at point blank range.”

The police said Dar was involved in the killings of Gulzar Ahmad Sheikh of Narbal, Tanveer Ahmad Zargar of Cheewa and Nazir Ahmad Dar of Warihama in the central Kashmir district of Budgam. The police claimed to recovered a pistol and some ammunition from the possession of Dar.

In a separate incident, the SSP said a special police team apprehended Hilal Ahmad Shah of Soibugh, Budgam, and Mohammad Ashraf Ahangar of Goom, Ahmadpora. Shah and Ahangar, the SSP said, were involved in the grenade attack on a retired senior superintendent of police in Magam.

The SSP was injured in the attack. The SSP said the police also arrested Bashir Ahmad, alias Ashiq, and recovered 60 kgs of explosives from his possession. He the killings were executed at the behest of Showkat Ahmad Ganai, who took over as the Hizb district commander after killing of Mohammad Yousuf Sheikh.

Mujataba said the killers were teenage boys and had been motivated to such an extent that whatever Ganai tells them, they are ready to do. Mujtaba said the boys were being paid a paltry sum for the killings. They get Rs 100, 200 or 300 for the purpose. The SSP said with the arrest of these militants, the Hizb network in the area has been eliminated.

Qaeda activists, killed, arrested, 24 dead bodies located

The American Army announced on Wednesday killing of the chief of the so-called "Iraq Army of Al-Qaeda Organization" in an operation in the town of Haditha west of the capital.

The army said in a statement that Shehab Hamed, also known as Abu Ali, was killed in a search operation in the town. The slain activist was responsible for attacks in Al-Qaem and Haditha, it said, adding that a child, used by the wanted as a shield, was shot dead in the operation. Two gunmen were killed and another was wounded in the same action.

The army reported arrest of a commander of Al-Qaeda, Abdel Ghafour Yahia Abdullah, and his personal driver in Mosul. He confessed that he had joined Al-Qaeda 18 months ago.

Elsewhere, Iraqi troops arrested six gunmen in Al-Yusufiah, police said, adding that arms and explosives were found in their possession.

In Al-Qaem, south of Al-Hella, a man tossed a hand-grenade on the house of a scholar, Lutfi Rajeh, wounding the cleric.

In the Baghdad district of Al-mansour, five gunmen were killd and another was wounded after the government troops burst into a house from where shots were fired in the direction of a police patrol.

The authorities located up to 24 dead bodies over the past hours in various locations in the country. (end) mhg.

Zarqawi’s recruiting status

I already wrote at some length about al Qaeda in Iraq's apparent personnel problems.

Now Andi has more info and links, such as the fact that French police has picked up six men in Paris "suspected of recruiting volunteers to fight against US and British forces in Iraq." To which Andi reasonably observes,

One would think, given the proximity of Iraq to countries such as Saudi Arabia, Iran and Jordan, that the jihadis wouldn't have to run to Europe to find recruits. But, that doesn't appear to be the case. ...

It seems that the lure of 72 virgins isn't all that powerful after all. Let's also remember the morale problem that Zarqawi's crew fretted about not so long ago. So, the next time you hear the media blabbering about our resources being stretched too thin, might want to keep this in mind.

(I don't know anything about this source so take the info for what you think it is worth.)

US troops detain police chief north of Baghdad

US troops detained an Iraqi police chief and dozens of policemen on Wednesday after insurgents attacked a US supply convoy on Tuesday, police said.

"US soldiers detained Brigadier Muhammed Khalaf al-Jubouri,police chief of Dhuluiyah town, north of Baghdad, and about 60 policemen for failing to deal with insurgents," a police source in Tikrit told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.

The source said US troops have sealed off the town, some 100 kmnorth of Baghdad, and detained some 400 people, including policemen, since insurgents attacked a convoy of trucks carrying military supplies for US troops on Tuesday.

Tuesday's attack damaged three trucks in the convoy guarded by US troops and killed three drivers, probably Turkish nationals, the source said.

TOWs ‘Supergrunts’ take on insurgents

The Marine convoy was moving fast down the dusty, black road toward Amariyah one recent afternoon when it came up on civilian vehicles speeding toward the group of humvees.

“Let them have it Murph,” yelled Sgt. Chris Serber, 28, team leader, as Cpl. Ryan Murphy, 27, heavy machine gunner, fired a flare from the top of their vehicle to clear a path.

These Marines, anti-tank gunners of Tube-launched, Optically-tracked, Wire-guided missiles, are one of the combat units leading the charge against insurgents here. With their wide range of military expertise in tactics and weaponry, the men of TOW Platoon, 2nd Tank Battalion, 2nd Marine Division, combining infantry-style operations with vehicle mobility, consider themselves the original ‘Supergrunts.’

“We set up a combined arms platoon that integrates mounted and dismounted forces,” said 1st Lt. Sean D. Gobin, 30, of Richmond, R.I., platoon commander, TOW platoon. “This gives us [greater] mobility and flexibility when conducting operations against the enemy.”

Originally envisioned during the Cold War to counter large formations of enemy tanks, considerable changes to TOW platoon began in July 2004. The anti-tank gunners reoriented their unit based on the combat experiences from the initial phases of Operation Iraqi Freedom when the adversarial threat was coming less from armored vehicles and more from tactics used by irregular enemy units.

Currently, the platoon consists of two sections and is divided into three teams. Each team has a fire team of dismounted infantry Marines and at least one humvee, with heavy weapons, able to provide increased mobility and greater fire support.

Marines in the unit with specialized training, perform a wide variety of tasks ranging from field communications to combat engineer tasks. Those with the specialized training in turn train their team members, giving the platoon their multi-role versatility.

“We have learned to be diversified in multiple combat roles,” said Murphy, of Springfield, Vt. “This is a new kind of warfare against a new kind of enemy.”

Their abilities have produced results. Since deploying to Iraq in March, the platoon has knocked out at least three insurgent IED teams and a suspected mortar team transporting heavy weapons and ammunition.

“There are no frontlines here, but we are [one unit of Marines] that go and chase after them,” said Serber, of Gladstone, Mo., of their task in tracking insurgents. “We have adapted to the enemy’s guerrilla war tactics.”

The insurgents may attempt to strike again, but TOW platoon and Marine units similar to them will continue their pursuit of the enemy.

“The reason we were able to stop these guys was because of how the platoon is organized and improved tactics,” said Gobin of their success against insurgents.

Added Serber, “When we [were able to think] outside the box, those tactics have succeeded.”

5 terrorists killed, 60 kg explosives seized in J&K

Security forces shot dead five terrorists including a Pakistani national, arrested four Hizbul Mujahideen terrorists along with 60 kg of explosives and busted a hideout in separate operations in Jammu and Kashmir, official sources said on Wednesday.

Four terrorists were killed in a major gun battle at Shogun in Shopian area of Pulwama district on Wednesday, the sources said.

Acting on specific information about the presence of terrorists, troops of Rashtra Rifles raided the village in the wee hours on Wednesday. The terrorists on seeing the troops opened fire triggering an encounter, the sources said.

One of the slain terrorists was identified as Javed Ahmad Thokhar, also believed to be members of Hizbul Mujahideen, is being ascertained, the sources said.

In another encounter, they said troops of Rashtriya Rifles killed a Pakistani terrorist affiliated to Lashker-e-Taiba outfit, Kaleem Ullah, during search operations at Fidderpora village of Rafiabad in Baramulla district on Wednesday.

Four terrorists of Hizbul Mujahideen were arrested from different places in Central Kashmir Badgam district, a police spokesman said, adding some ammunition and 60 kg of explosives were recovered from him.

He said security forces also busted a hideout at Tugar Dhoke in Poonch district and seized seven kg of explosives from there.

Suspected terrorist detained in Chechnya

A member of an illegal armed group on a list of wanted suspects in a series of crimes has been detained in Chechnya's Achkhoi-Martan district, sources in Chechen law enforcement agencies told Interfax by phone on Wednesday.

"A member of an illegal armed group, suspected of involvement in two shooting attacks and a bombing in the village of Samashki in summer 2004, was detained in his home as a result of a sweep operation in Samashki," a source said.

Early on Tuesday, the bodies of two local residents with bullet wounds were discovered in the Komsomolskoye village of Groznensky district. A pistol with one bullet was collected at the scene, the source said.

In another report, a cache of ammunition, including three Kalashnikov automatic rifles, a Makarov pistol, five hand grenades, 157 cartridges, two kilograms of explosives and three electrical detonators, was discovered in the basement of a ruined building in the village of Chernorechye in Grozny's Zavodskoi district.
