A Jet Blue aircraft just did a low altitude flyby of Long Beach airport after reporting some concern with their forward gear. The television helicopter caught an image of it - the gear is turned sideways and tilted.
Aircraft is heading out towards the ocean to drop fuel, will turn around, and attempt a 'soft field' landing, keeping the nose up as long as possible.
Guy on FOX saying foam will lessen the impact, what a twit.
I was in SUX when this happened. My niece was a newspaper photog and some of the news services stole her photos.
Gary Brown (who would make a great FEMA Head) took care of the ground support. He did a hellova job.
A college classmate of mine had to take the videos of the autopsies (he was in the National Guard there). He later went a bit off kilter. He said the biggest pain was watching the meds peal a few month old dead baby off the burned chest of her mother.
Hard to take, eh?
LOL -- by the time October rolls around I will have flown 85 flights since January.
He is indeed a true American hero -- and they forced him into retirement a few months after his amazing performance, due to his age. Silly. His long years of experience no doubt helped immensely when he had just a few minutes to invent and implement a method for controlling a large jetliner with no hydraulics. No sign whatsoever of mental decline. At the press conference the next day, he was calm, clear-headed, and philosophical, while his younger co-pilot sat in stunned silence, with the press having been informed in advance that he wouldn't speak at all.
All aircraft being cleared on LAX approach.
He's heading northbound now, approach s/e of LA. Starting his left turn towards approach.
Better chance of winning the mega-lottery than getting in a plane crash (unless youre getting shot at of couse by ragheads :)
Decent to 4000 feet. 20 miles east of LAX.
The pilots going to flare for as long as possible.
Praying for a safe stop
MSNBC says it's confirmed that 140 passengers on board
Probably just over 100 knots, lightweight like that.
Did you bring any marshmallows?
Well, I think it's suspicious a plane load of rich and middle class folks gets this much attention. We don't hear about the plane loads of poor and minorities that have landing gear problems. They probably just put them down in the nearest marshland.
Prayers up.
They just said it should land in soon, it's only 18 miles out..
Based on Hole-in-one's image, it appears the the gear is turned, but not locked down. I'm not familiar with how it should look, but it appears as though it is slightly tilted forward, as if it started into its stowed position and jammed.
KCAL just showed about 100 LAPD command staff arrive.
Starting his left turn onto approach, still 15 to 20 miles out.
bush cut the Nose Gear Improvement Administration budget $7 billion dollars last year, and gave the money to halliburton.
