Breaking: Jet Blue emergency landing, Long Beach, CA (UPDATE: Plane Landed Safely)
KABC Channel 7, live broadcast

Posted on 09/21/2005 4:21:43 PM PDT by kingu

A Jet Blue aircraft just did a low altitude flyby of Long Beach airport after reporting some concern with their forward gear. The television helicopter caught an image of it - the gear is turned sideways and tilted.

Aircraft is heading out towards the ocean to drop fuel, will turn around, and attempt a 'soft field' landing, keeping the nose up as long as possible.

O'Reilly and Donahue rhetorically fellating each other right now on FOX!

Guess I picked a bad night to hone into Breaking News.

More likely just snap the nose gear right off.

And where is it going to go?
Is it going to fly into the aircraft? Cause an explosion?

Nobody knows what will happen.

It'll be smooth, nose down, full stop.

Alaska Air crashed because a screw-drive mechanism had not been sufficiently greased. An Aeroperu flight crashed because a warning sticker (REMOVE BEFORE FLIGHT) was left covering a barometric pressure sensor orifice.

It was such a non incident at the time, I forgot all about it, found info on another board. We did nearly crash a 737-300 once at DFW, that was very close to a disaster...

Previous A320 nose gear problem.

When the landing gear was lowered, the flight crew received landing gear control and interface unit (LGCIU) faults. A visual fly-by revealed the nose wheels were rotated 90 degrees from the desired direction for landing. A normal touchdown was made, after which, the captain commanded an emergency evacuation using the overwing exits. Examination of the airplane revealed the external 'O' rings in the steering control valve had extruded and by-passed pressurized hydraulic fluid to rotate the nose wheels. This event had occurred before, and the manufacturer had issued a service bulletin. The operator had not complied with the service bulletin, nor were they required to comply with it.

Very true. We could be nuked and FOX will cut away to an ad.

Unless they had Geraldo live on the scene...

Fox has to hoist Bill O'Reilly's ego ... second only to Dan Rather's.

what exactly are Milibars?

1 bar = 14.7 psi. Normal air pressure. One bar= 1000 millibars.

is "up shot" really the phrase we want to use there?

even if they did it wont help here, once it fell out of its internal alignment mechanism thru bad rebuild, the airstream forces the gear into its path of least resistance one wheel in front one in back. There is nothing that will get that gear back into where it should be now.

They have to know this.

Apparently the A320 may have a history of this, but I'd still be interested in knowing if there were any Mohammedans on the ground crew.
