Breaking: Jet Blue emergency landing, Long Beach, CA (UPDATE: Plane Landed Safely)
KABC Channel 7, live broadcast

Posted on 09/21/2005 4:21:43 PM PDT by kingu

A Jet Blue aircraft just did a low altitude flyby of Long Beach airport after reporting some concern with their forward gear. The television helicopter caught an image of it - the gear is turned sideways and tilted.

Aircraft is heading out towards the ocean to drop fuel, will turn around, and attempt a 'soft field' landing, keeping the nose up as long as possible.

Not the plane's fault, you conveniently forget the 737-200 that lost pressure in Cyprus, the 737 that crashed in Peru, the ATR 72 that crashed in Tunisia, the MD80 crash in Indonesia, etc.

The A320 is a great plane, I fly on them all the time, Jet Blue is a great airline as well. Their entire fleet used to be A320, but they just started getting the new EMB 170's for shorter flights.

They're talking about emergency exit. The passengers will go down the rubber chutes.

We did that...(if it wasn't for the cute Burbank fireman at the bottom catching us, it would have been harrowing! LOL)

They are landing at LAX - they named the runway on KFI but I don't remember what they said.

what exactly are Milibars?

1 "bar" is nominal sea level atmosphreic pressure. 1,000 millibars to a bar. 898 mb is .898 of normal atmospheric pressure at sea level.

A millibar is a measure of atmospheric pressure. standard pressure is 1012 MBS.

The lower the central pressure of a hurricane, the stronger it becomes. a central pressure of 900 is very low, and, as we can see, a cat 5 hurricane is the result.

The gear will not re-align, it will grind off to halfway thru the axle, but the landing should be safe.
