Breaking: Jet Blue emergency landing, Long Beach, CA (UPDATE: Plane Landed Safely)
KABC Channel 7, live broadcast
Posted on 09/21/2005 4:21:43 PM PDT by kingu
A Jet Blue aircraft just did a low altitude flyby of Long Beach airport after reporting some concern with their forward gear. The television helicopter caught an image of it - the gear is turned sideways and tilted.
Aircraft is heading out towards the ocean to drop fuel, will turn around, and attempt a 'soft field' landing, keeping the nose up as long as possible.

The danger here is having a ground loop when the nose gear hits the runway..
Nope wopn't happen... the nose gear will collapse first..
You'll see a nose hight landing and as speed bleeds off the nose will lower.. then the N?W makes contact. it will collapse...this should end well... but with it's tail high

They ARE dumpng fuel. On MSNBC they have a close up of the aircraft, and I can see the fuel streaming out the back.
I don't think that is an Airbus.

Messier-Dowty is responsible for both the nose and main landing gear for this family. The nose landing gear is a single stage telescopic strut with integral rack and pinion steering. The main landing gear includes a two stage shock absorber to improve comfort at the time of landing. Principal materials used for the landing gear are ultra high tensile steel and high strength aluminum alloy.

Norm, I just can't believe this! How did that landing gear get so twisted or cockeyed?
Shep said he's right -- they cannot dump fuel!

My understanding is that they need the longest runway that they can find, which would be LAX. Long Beach is a small regional airport.

I have worked on airfields and AFB's for over 30 years and have seen several of these landings. If done right, after the pilot puts the nosewheel on the runway the aircraft will stop in a very short distance. Must be noisy as hell inside but everyone I saw came out alright. Quite a bit of difference with a nosewheel problem and problems with the main landing gear.

ValuJet later bought out AirTran, and then took on that name. ValuJet did have some maintenance issues.
But the VALUJET FLIGHT 592 catastrophe was more a systemic failure & series of events wherein a container of live oxygen generator canister's got loaded into the forward cargo bay, and later ignited.

OMG, those poor scared people. I can sympathize with them. Our flight in July (from Burbank!) got turned around, after 30 min because of a bomb scare.
We were down on the ground in less than 13 minutes, but that was the longest 13 minutes in my life.
Those people have been up there for hours. My gosh, those people are in my prayers!

I still think Edwards would be better - better support, fewer spectators, longer runways, etc.

Do you know if the Airbus can or can not dump fuel? I have heard both answers.
To: onyx
They are flying an orbit to burn as much fuel as possible because the aircraft is not able to dump fuel.
