Breaking: Jet Blue emergency landing, Long Beach, CA (UPDATE: Plane Landed Safely)
KABC Channel 7, live broadcast

Posted on 09/21/2005 4:21:43 PM PDT by kingu

A Jet Blue aircraft just did a low altitude flyby of Long Beach airport after reporting some concern with their forward gear. The television helicopter caught an image of it - the gear is turned sideways and tilted.

Aircraft is heading out towards the ocean to drop fuel, will turn around, and attempt a 'soft field' landing, keeping the nose up as long as possible.

---The guy KABC in Los Angeles is interviewing ("John" Regional Safety Director, Airline Pilots Assn.) has flown the A319 and A320 and claims no fuel dump capability.---

so they're trying to fly fuel off?

I gave up flying forever after 9/11. Hated it before, needed lots of xanax. Glad I don't have that worry anymore.

fox said destined for kennedy . . . go figure.

Amsterdam to landing weight, Kennedy to almost nothing -- either way they've got a lot of fuel to dump. It's likely to be a while...

They are going out to sea to dump the fuel and make a landing attempt...

Well, Airbus is a French designed fly by wire aircraft and has NO PROVISION to dump fuel, so they are going to fly low and burn off fuel...saying that may take 3 hours....

MSNBC just said "experts" say this has a very high probability of landing OK (relatively speaking). The front gear will snap off, but it should not be a tragedy.

Keeping fingers crossed.

Flying around in circles dumping fuel, but Shep said airbuses can't dump fuel!

I heard that also. If they can't dump it, they have to burn it. It's weight and it's a potential fire hazard. I suppose that they can rev up some thrust while resisting with the flaps and such to burn off fuel more quickly, but I'm only guessing here.

No, Value jet became Airtran I believe. Jet Blue is a new airline that I read somewhere that Soros is a major backer. Nevertheless, prayers for all involved and for a safe landing.
