Bette Midler struck one of the few sour notes at last night's Madison Square Garden benefit for Hurricane Katrina victims when she made a joke about President Bush.
"I know George Bush. . . . I met him in the 1970s through his coke dealer," she said.
The crowd booed the not-so-divine Ms. M for the quip.

Oh, well- scratch yet another one off the list. "Shut Up & Sing" comes to mind.
My favorite was when Nick Nolte was asked what it was like making out with her in Down and Out in Beverly Hills and he said something like: "When I'm home I kiss my dog every morning."
Another thread, linked from Drudge, suggests that she was more verbose, and filthy-mouthed, than this snippet.
Know your audience, Bette. That's not a good joke to make when you're doing a Log Cabin Republican benefit.

This rabid political opportunism is out of control. It's time for closet Republicans, in Hollywood and all points beyond, to dust-off the mothballs of intimidation and apathy and speak out in support of this fine President and administration. I'm fed up with the level of importance given to all these simple entertainers and their knee-jerk uninformed opinion.

Rush and Hannity both played the audio of her tirade (with the f-bomb bleeped out, of course). I heard nothing but thunderous applause and cheering for everything she said.
Boo'd? When I heard the clip, it sounded like cheers...Anyone else hear the clip?
